Title: My new paint job
Post by: diggers on July 05, 2008, 11:32:33 PM
I recently bought my 81 R65.  It was a faded and chipped red, badly needed some attention!  I decided to go with black!  Still need to clean up the engine covers etc, but I reckon it looks stacks better than befor.  Even my wife commented no how much more classy it looks!

Very pretty!  I really like those fairings.

The rest of the bike looks pretty good, but I know how you must feel with that brand new paint...

*Very* impressive!  [smiley=clap.gif]  I'm particularly taken by the pinstripes. Because you wrote that the previous color was red, I presume that the stripes are new, also. According to some forum postings I've seen, finding someone in our geographic area who can replicate beemer pinstripes in a tank repainting is about as easy as finding the Holy Grail.

You can't go wrong with black! Looks very good! The engine bits come apart easily and once buffed out on a wheel or repainted will finish the job! wish mine looked that good!

Nice job!  First thing I noticed was the nice pinstriping as well.  Of course, I'm not prejudiced as mine has the same look...  ;)

What little fairing is that?  I haven't seen one like that before.

You haven't been reading your parts manual!
I'm disappointed in you, Aïda...

The fairing is part # 46 63 1 240 822, and is available from Chicago BMW for $200...

And the install kit is still available for $16!!!  A bargain, if you ask me.

Was the tank striping done with 1-Shot lettering enamel and a sword striper? Local hotrod painter?

Sorry, msbuck. Was inquiring about the diggers ride. The pinstripes look great but are a wee bit wider than mine.

I ordered the pinstriping from motobins at the same time that I got the missing sidecover and a couple of badges etc.  Not sure on the exact specs.  Got the proverbial "old mate who used to be a car painter" to do the painting and striping etc.  It hasn't added any to the performance though!

The jury's out on the little fairing.  I don't think it's big enough to actually offer anything in terms of reduced wind/rain on the face or fuel economy.  Although it does hide the headlight/instrument cluster area, which looks a little shabby.

I enlisted my brother to pay me a visit and he balnaced my carbs so my excessive-idle-when-hot issue has been sorted now too.  It's a pleasure to be able to keep my hand off the throttle at the traffic lights now!

Very nice indeed!

I plan to do the same with the wh8la2 this winter and is collecting a whole set of painted parts to paint. This way I will have two r65es, one white and one black ;D

The striping can be done in many ways, I will try to make a template and spray the stripes with a little spray gun.

greetings from a grey north with precipitation pending
