Title: sign from above????
Post by: milkman on October 30, 2007, 04:00:37 AM
G'day again.
I have been off this forum for a while now, because they changed our security settings on the work server, and for some reason, this domain wouldn't work?? Must have thought R65'ers were dodgy.

Anyway, I've put some serious km's on my LS int he past year, stress free, until a fortnight ago (i posted about this elsewhere).
I am nearing my wits end, chasing this gremlin from my bike. I was contemlating selling  it once I get it fixed again, cursing so called german reliabilty........

.....Then I reached out and thought I'd try for the 100th time, the R65 forum, expecting it to time out again.....and it worked.

Hoping the collective knowledge in here might see me through.

It's good to hear from you again, the last time I can remember a post form you, was after your trip to the US and Mexico, seems like about 5-6 month's ago.

Kind of makes you wonder about a member that all of a sudden stops posting, and you don't hear from them again !

I have not had a problem with this site, but quite often the Boxerworks site comes up as filtered due to 'tasteless content' at work .

I think you're right Bob
That was in Feb? Then I was in the UAE for a stint. Seems like a lot longer.
I think all you Northies were just dusting off bikes for riding season, and now you're probably all putting them away again?

Milkman
I have not put the bikes up for the winter season , since I moved to Phoenix 14 years ago today, but the riding season is coming to a close in the northern parts of the US and Canada.

Rob Valdez, the comment was just a generalization, as since the beginning of the year, there have been 7 employees of Southwest Airlines that have lost their lives in motorcycle collisions.

So it just makes me a little more concerned, about someone that 'falls of the face of the earth'.

Four have been in the aircraft maintenance department, so I get a little more info on the incident, than if it was somebody in another department.

Five of the seven were involved in  incidents, where an on-coming vehicle made a left turn in front of them at a major intersection.

One involved my immediate supervisor back in May.

The last one was an employee from Jacksonville, Fl. hit a deer somewhere in West Virginia, and went off the road and down a ravine. It was two weeks after the incident, before he was found.

Hi Milkman,
Glad you got back.  We do wonder what happens to people.

So I thought I'd take this opportunity to say that I haven't disappeared.  Life has just gotten way too busy.   [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]  I'll be back to posting soon.  I've got some electrical stuff going on - battery not charging.   And I haven't had time to work on it yet.   :'(

HI MILKMAN AND MELENA!!

Glad to have you back.   I know what you mean about life getting too busy.  I've been a little slack in reading this board lately as well.

Hi Melena!! So good to hear from you and Aïda too. I haven't been on too much this summer either. Great to hear from Milkman and I just wish I could help him fix his gremlins described in the maintenance/work section

Love Aïda's emoticons....you are good at finding these!

Hi Milkman, Aïda, Sue, Melana, Rob and Bob,

Nope.  Still here lurking and putting my two cents in here and there.  I'll be riding here in Atlanta all winter - Gerbings at the ready!  I just did a the winter service on the R65LT and I have a new leak!  Both the gear shifter and the neutral switch are leaking (again).  So I need to do the spline lube and I will get both of these them some after the middle of November.  Contemplating trips about the country next year.  I have a class re-union in June in Mass and a fishing trip in Oregon in July - can you say "road trips".

I knew you could!

Don't give up on the electrical.  Check for good grounds and also open green and black power wires underneath the speedo tach that are for optional equipment.  If the ignition is cutting out then look at the coils and the mounts.  They can be troublesome.  As long as you come back we will be here.

Sincerely,

Well, its not electrical......I've tested everything, including my mechanic being nice enough to lend me his test unit parts and let me test them myself for free.

Playing with carbs now, and the screws on the top have decided to go soft and strip, even when always using the correct size driver and being careful.

It continues. If teh carbies don't sort this out, I'll try a match in the fuel tank.

No, I can't be too harsh, Betsy just took me 2400km with no dramas, and is still going, just not very well.

I won't be putting the old mule down yet. Have to keep the LS on the road

Usually a hand impact driver is required to get these screws out.  I replace them with stainless steel allen head screws...

If the phillips head is not completely buggered up, try some valve grinding compound on your screwdriver bit.

Other wise you're  going to have to drill them out.

If do get the screws out, use some anti-seize compound on the threads.

Might not be a bad idea to use anti-seize compound on fasteners as you work on your bike.

As I remember, that you reside in on a salt water coastal area .

That 'salt air' is pretty tough on aluminum.

Bill G. Good to hear from you too!    Can you say BMW MOA International Rally in Gillette, WY.???? Sorta enroute to Oregon in July. :o And, the Top of the Rockies rally at Paonia CO. is the next weekend. I'll have to check out which weekends exactly for you.  Be back!

Yep, I'm drilling those little suckers.
BAck ones on both sides were fine, front ones on both carb lids were drill out jobs
Interesting as I'd taken them both off before, no drama.

I'm not on the water, but close enough....damn salt.

Use the stainless screws as replacements.  You can get a kit from Bing that has 4 screws, some anti-seize, and an allen wrench for about $8.  Or, I sometimes sell just the screws on e-Bay, let me know if you want some...

Hi Y`all.
Just readin Bob Roller`s post re the number of Bike fatalities and Its a sobering post.

Over here in Ireland our motorcycle accident stats do not make pleasant reading.
In our case its the same story in mirror image...the car driver making a RIGHT turn in the face of an oncoming mororcycle.....what should be the simplest, safest of manouveres turns into a veritable death row of Mororcyclists.

The issue of visibility, conspicuity, and ensuring we have some means of impacting upon the drivers MIND rather than their VEHICLE is to me one of the Keys to staying alive on two wheels in an environment where our fellow roadusers are enclosed in a micro environment which encourages total relaxation and a disassociation from the world at the end of their hood....!

Have to say that a WHITE R65 supporting a WHITE Vetter Windjammer V with a WHITE helmet on my empty head does appear to snap most Drivers awake......  ;)

Just want to say that I read that the headlight modulators were good at getting the car driver's attention...BUT it didn't work for me as a guy in Jackson, WY. one morning last summer pulled out and did his lefthand turn right in front of me as I was proceeding through the intersection in town with traffic lights.  He sat still for ever so long waiting and only drove left at the last second..thank goodness for ABS brakes and me not taking my eyes off him. Another fellow from the right also did his right hand turn before me. Yeeesh! Really good it was slower speed city driving. All I saw was a red coloured pickup truck bed going by at what seemed like one foot away from my front  tire.

Anyway, I have been thinking that maybe it was the headlight modulator that caused confusion on the car driver's part....DID he think I was flashing him to go ahead and turn in front of me????  My riding buddy says that's false thinking and the guy was just another idiot. I am so catatonic about it now that I am turning OFF my modulator intown!  BTW, I wear a white helmet and the Olympia hi-viz yellow jacket.

What do you guys think??......Helen Two Wheels got pushed off the highway by an 18 wheeler driver who says he thought her modulator flashing was telling him it was OK to pull over. She was only 1/2 way along the truck's length at the time he pulled over! :o

I personally look at the situation as, put bright lights on the front.

On the R65, I have PIAA 40 driving lights 6.25 inch ( 160 mm) round style, with PIAA H3 superwhite lamps installed, and PIAA superwhite H4 for the headlight.

It may be a bit too much for night conditions, but since I installed them, I havn't had anybody pull out in front of me.

I also use the high beam on the headlight during day light riding.

On the oilhead, I have PIAA 510 driving lights installed with PIAA H3 superwhite lamps, and PIAA superwhite H4 headlamp.
