Title: Ultimate Christmas Present!
Post by: mxwinky on December 25, 2007, 10:27:54 AM
Okay, don't hate me, but a neighbor just gave me an '82 R65LS that's been sitting under
a cover outside his house for the last six years!  Better yet, it's darn near immaculate.
Of course it's going to need all the usual stuff to get it back on the road, ie. battery, all
fluids changed, carbs gone through, tank flushed (and possibly resealed), and the steering
head bearings are just about frozen from sitting all these years.  But it's red, gorgeous,
and all there.  I'm really looking forward to getting it back on the road; this will be my
first BMW since I had an R100CS back in the '80s.  My current stable is heavily Ducati
biased ('95 900SS SP, '05 Multistrada 1000S) but clearly Santa said I needed another
red motorcycle.  Good stuff!

Anyway, I hope you fine R65 enthusiasts out there can alert me to what sort of things I
should look out for on this fine beast.  It's only got 6k miles on it, but of course it's been
sitting for six years.  What are the trouble spots on this bike and where are the best
resources for parts?  Thanks for any advice and light you can shed on this project.  I
look forward to many fun R65 miles ahead!

Welcome mxwinky,

It's amazing how people acquire motorcycles at times, you just happened to be at the right place at the right time !

It seems like more and more R65's are being put back on the road in the last few years.

Yeah, my neighbor and his wife have strolled by my house many times while taking
their kid for a walk, and of course the kid freaks out and runs into my garage everytime.
I've got 13 bikes in there right now so it's quite a sight.  The whole neighborhood knows
my house as "The Motorcycle House."  Best of all, they like it.  Anyway, he knew he wasn't
going to get around to putting the bike back on the road and he wanted it to go to a good
home with someone who would appreciate it and asked if I'd take it.  Didn't have to ask
twice!  Santa exists, but you have to believe.

[smiley=thud.gif] [smiley=thud.gif]  Wow!!! You are one lucky so and so!  Being Christmas I can't spend much time here but we will all be here to help you out:

Fluids, lubing, splines on wheel and tranny input need greasing, 0-rings on brake actuator arm, tire, tires, brake pads/shoes and caliper pistons and of course brake fluid  bleed and refill. Hope that master cylinder if OK. All electrical connections grease! Oh, yeah, heat sink on the ICU thingy...we'll show ya.

Hmmmm....we already have a step by step for the steering head bearings here on the forum.
I'm rambling cause I'm rushing.....just a very quick and dirty heads up.  New battery and get a maintenance charger like Battery Tender. Take off the float bowls off the carb and see what is in there and drain off gas if any and also buy new fuel line and clean air filter.  Stop, Sue..you have things you must do now!!!

Bye for now!

Thanks for the well-wishes and tech info.  I'll be tending to all points from axle to axle and back
again on this fine beauty, and am looking forward to it.  It sounds like you're the man, Justin, but
hopefully I'll be able to tackle everything without having to cramp your garage space any further.
I've been riding and wrenching since God was a baby and should be able to manage most anything
this R65 can throw at me.  I've done quite a few full-on restorations in my day, and if the interior
of this bike is half as good as the exterior it's going to be an easy build.  Famous last words!  I'll
keep everyone posted as the project progresses.  Stay tuned, and thanks for everything!

If ever this thing burdens you to much the offer is still open.  I'm sure I can "scootch" things around a bit and make enough room for another orphan.  ;)

WE NEED PICS!!!

I wonder if people would give ME bikes, if I was a nice person.  I'll never know.

No doubt youve been nice rather than naughty. The little old lady across the street from me curses like a sailor when im running my bikes in the drive. I dont think my neibs would gift anything to me, let alone another bike. congrats, and welcome.

A FREE LS? Some folks just have all the luck! I'll be in the Bay Area come February so hurry and do the maintenance! After I get a free ride I promise I won't hate you!
Welcome to our little corner of the internets.
