Hi,
I'm a new member and just wanted to post a picture of my 1979 R65 that I have just about finished restoring.
It now runs great with Omega electronic ignition and cross referrenced ignition coils from Auto Zone for a 1959 VW beatle. Thanks for looking.

I have to say that is one of the most unique paint jobs I have ever seen on any BMW, let alone a R65! I'm impressed! I'll bet you get lots of compliments on the bike, too! Did you think of the paint scheme on your own, or did you see a photo of another bike that had a similar look, or what? No matter what, it does look really nice!!
Hope to have you as a "regular" here in our little zoo! Look forward to hearing more about you and your bike!

I painted the bike myself, tan and brown, mainly because the seat was brown and in great shape. The original color was a rust color that had become scratched, pitted and faded. Thanks for the complements, it does get a lot of attention, and people that like old bikes offen approach me.
Having owned several BMW, but never an airhead, I do have a question for you or anybody that can answer. The valves get noisy after the engine warms up and is ridden several miles. Is this normal? I have adjusted the valves to specs and on initial start up is sounds great, give it a little while and it ticks, what seems loud to me.

Mike what a unique paint scheme ! I think the British would say it was a 'proper' looking motorbike. It adds a lot of class to the bike. Welcome to the site. On your valve noise, it is a common trait for the boxer engine to have valve ticking, especially if you came from a K series bike. I don't know if you torqued the nuts that hold the head on, but I was told to torque the head before adjusting the valve clearance. Also excessive rocker arm side clearance adds to the valve ticking, so you may want to check that the next time you're in there.

Thanks for the advise on the valve noise. Next adjustment I will check to see if there too much play. By the way the bike has 47,000 miles on it and it doesn't seem to burn any oil.

That bike is so cool!............I love seeing the classic bikes restored.........returned to life. Ya did a hell of a paint job on that bike......... Makes me wonder how mine would look........with a two tone paint job on the sidecar. .............Maybe red and black. Hummmmmmmmmmm...... you made me go out ....look at mine and wonder. Welcome Mike thats a cracking paint job, on a really tidy looking bike. Kind of reminds me of the colour scheme of the old Whitbread brewery vans from when I was a kid.

Welcome aboard ! While some ultra purists wouldn't call it "restored" unless
it was painted to match factory spec, I'd say that it was better this way.
Rob V has a fondness for his 'bronco-brown' bike color, but this color scheme
sets off well with the different shades.
I've been debating whether to eventually get my R65LS repainted to match the factory
specs, or to go a bit different, like find someone who could do a "smoke" paint job like
on the R90S, but using the Henna Red and Gloss Black, possibly with a little gold pin stripe.....
Hmmmm.

Mike, that is a darn pretty bike you have there!
As an original owner of a Bronco Brown, I have come to appreciate the color over the years. Even the seat!
The cream color you used almost looks like Dover White (http://home.att.net/~jeff.dean/slash2.htm), if you are familiar with pre-1970 BMW's.
I might contact you to design a scheme for my bike, if I ever get all the pieces mounted...

Welcome and what a sweet looking bike. Its no wonder you get comments from the street people. Its got a real 70's look about it and full marks for going with the brown it works really well. As for the noise, I used to own an old Government Colt .45 that rattled when I shook it and it never jammed once in all the thousands of rounds I put through it. The adage was 'If it don't rattle it don't work' perhaps it applies to R65s. Mine rattles like two skeletons having sex in a tin coffin but she rides fine.
Jeez Thrang, you actually saw a Whitbread beer van! Wow!

It actually a Chevrolet Desert Sand, and a Metallic Brown.

And NH Mike, if you didn't already know, BMW did do "Red Smoke" and "Green Smoke" on their upper-line RS and RT bikes in the 80s, although you don't see many, especially of the Green.
Here's a couple pics of an '88 R100RS in Red Smoke that got away from me while I was busy counting my pennies: ya snooze, ya lose... ::)

Yeah, ain't that just about the prettiest thing you ever saw?? The seller had probably a dozen pics, and let me tell ya, it was low miles & spotless!!
And please, no need for apologies, for I too am a blasphemer :-[
What's even worse than losing it was that it sold for $4900.00, or no more than the average RS of the period... :'(
