Title: Did you have a "glitch" today, Justin?
Post by: Rob Valdez 79 R65 on March 29, 2007, 08:06:45 PM
Was this your note?

Something happened while installing and uninstalling some new toys. For whatever reason, everything was deleted. Sigh.

I'll get everything back up and running on[e] day.

-Me

It would appear that everything is alright, now.  I did get a "bad - evil" message earlier today.

All's well that end's well?

Yeah, from a few months ago.

The server burped today and the file permissions got farkled up on the public directory.  The kid reported it to the hosting company and they fixed it...

I had the same problem today, not to sound like a whiney butt, but I have had more problems trying to access this site than any other I regularly go to. This is from various different computers on numerous internet service providers, so I have eliminated a fault at my end. Has anyone else experienced this as well?

I agree, Bob.  I have numerous delays both at home and here at work.

Since it is free, and Justin (and his son) are giving it their all, I have not said anything.  (I usually use the time to get something constructive done around the house...  ::) )

But, Justin, if there is anything that can be done by throwing money at it, let us know!

If monetary support is needed, count me in!

A-ha, so it wasn't just me yesterday, huh? Thought I'd been "caught" at work, and this site banned!

But yeah, like we discussed once before, if it's ever an issue of needing $ to maintain, develop or improve the site, please count me in too. In fact, maybe we could charge a modest membership fee, if deemed necessary?

But John, you want to pay double? Is that a Moderator's privilege??  ;)

That was my first thought, too!

The response to all of my complaints is, "You get what you pay for..."  He is looking into changing hosting providers.  What kind of grief this will cause us I don't know.

Hence, our unsolicited offers.

...And acknowledgments of your efforts...

+5

The forum owner at Two Wheeled Texans (twtex.com) uses paypal for monthly donations. Of course there are thousands of participants there, an active core of 2-300 give generously every month. AND he allows gift subscriptions.

The server owner at Micapeak (hosts hundreds of motor chat lists) asks for donations once a year, in February iirc, and everyone ponies up to their ability.

Wherever I download freeware there's usually a button for donations... so easy to go without a couple of mochas every month!

When you and "The Kid" (gawd, he's so tall he doesn't SEEM like a kid!) figure out a new host, please pass the hat and let us show you love. No tat required!  ;D

Which reminds me, I think it has been a little over a year since I donated to Duane's cause (a new dress!).

Oh wow, Justin, I read that SO wrong!  I am sorry!

If I read it correctly (now...) you are the one complaining [to your son] and it is his response "You get what you pay for..."

Well, if that is correct, I feel much better.  I thought you were taking Bob's and my comments personally, and I would never want to hurt your feelings.

But like we have said, anytime you want to get monetary on this, just say the word.

As far as "membership fees" go, I want to go on record as being firmly against that idea.  People should be free to come here as they please.  If they enjoy it and get something out of it, I am sure 90% (of the regulars) will contribute.

We'll see what happens.  If he chooses a different hosting company and they have YaBB as part of the canned stuff you can install then it shouldn't be a big deal to just move over a couple of folders.  The hard part would probably be prodding sloth out of hibernation to change the redirect address...

If it gets to the point where money will need to start changing hands, paying users will probably "demand" feature enhancements/additions and such and I don't really know if I want to deal with that or not...  But, if that's the road that needs to be taken some time in the future I will gladly "pass the torch"

You can leave sloth up to me.  I have his home phone #.   ;)
