Title: Another recruit!
Post by: Thomas_h._from_a. on March 17, 2007, 06:36:47 PM
Hello together!

I just registered and like to give you an idea about myself.

I ran into your forum by reading in "kleine-boxer.de", the german forum. I very much appreciate to see that our passion for the old BMWs is also alive overseas  :) !!

About me: I was situated in the States back in 1984 - going to navy schools because of my membership in the german navy. Great time, big fun, but up to now, no chance to see Amerika again... anyway, since I consider this forum as a good platform for conversation, I hope to keep some kind of connection alive  :) !

Kind regards,
Thomas

Welcome aboard Thomas. Always great to have someone that can speak our manufacturers lingo  ;)

What are you riding?

Chris

Hi Chris,

thanks for the welcome  :) - after a long time of abstinence I started with a R65 two years ago. Very fast I discovered that that one was a bit too small for me (6´4"). So today I´m riding a R100RT and for occasions that I´m in a hurry I got a K100RT - not that much appriciated in our forum  :D...

greetings
Thomas

Glad to have you on board,  Thomas.  We have a couple of other Kleine-Boxer folks who drop in from time-to-time.  Dirk and another who goes by Kuzzimuzzi, or something like that.  We have various Airheads from R65 tp R100RT and my youngest son started on an R65 before moving on to a R1200 ST.

Regards,

Funny, I thought about Dirk (ScottColumbus) earlier today, I was missing his great photo essays. In checking the members, I see he hasn't been logged in or posted in over a month.
Last we heard, wasn't he headed to the U.S. and a trip to Vegas & the west coast? Did he ever get back home that we know of?
Hope all is well..... [smiley=uhoh2.gif]

   ps: Welcome, Thomas!

Hi Justin and Steve - thanks for the welcome!

I know both guys - Dirk (Scottcolumbus) and Stefan (Kuzzimuzzi). They posted a thread in our forum about you guys which made me curious and that´s why I tried and registered yesterday...

as far as I know they are both alright! The first weekend in June we´ll meet at Dirk´s house (approximately 23 people up to now). So if anyone of you is hanging around in this area to that time, why not joining us?  ;)

Greetings
Thomas

"Hallo, Thomas!  Wie Gehts?"  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Back in the mid 90's, I worked for a German BMW supplier in SC by the name of Draexlmaier who made the leather inserts for the interiors of the (then) Z3 and later X5.  I took German classes for two years and learned some basic German in order to be able to carry on conversations with my supervisor, who was from Karlsruhe.  I don't get many chances to speak or write German much anymore, sad to say.  :(

We are glad to have you as a member of our forum, even if you do not ride a R65.  As long as you appreciate the bike, that is good enough for us!

Please tell Dirk when you see him that we miss his excellent photo essays on his trips!  We also hope to see your postings (and maybe photos as well) in the future!  "Spaeter", Thomas!

"Mit Fruendlichen Grussen"

Hi John,

I´ve told Dirk already - think he´ll show up soon.

If you want to practice your German, why not register in our forum and give it a try? Makes our forum also a bit more international. So far as I know we have members from other european countries, but Amerika I don´t know - just go ahead  ;)!
Greetings
Thomas

Hi folks, :D

Thomas told me, that you´re already missing me. I´m glad about that.  ;)

During the last weeks I´ve always read here in the forum, but I havn´t posted. Since January I have a new job and for the first time in my life I have to work really hard. :'(

It´s great to see this forum grow und become more and more international. :)

What happened to me in the meantime?

In winter only BMW´s and Russian Bikes are on the road (the Japanese Harley-Davidson-plagiats start to come back right now). And we regularly met the sidecar-bikers at the port of Hamburg.

The man next to my wife is a psychiatrist. He was there with a Suzuki GN 250. He got wet eyes when he saw her R65. It was his first motorcycle. He asked my wife if he was allowed take a little ride on the cow. He did it and he was glad. ;D ;D. He swore that he would sell his Suzuki and buy himself a R65 again.

Always the same. A victim of the Russian quality. :o

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F1024_3461396465303761.jpg&hash=88ad7683ea80bd9a0c118b97943665d426f3d3a7)

And I caused a little trouble to my R65 by troubleshooting. :o

I tried to get rid of a noise from the engine. It was a harmless noise, but it disturbed me for a long time. I bought new adjusting screws for the valves. Here you see the new screws. They cost unbelievable 70,-$. :( >:(

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F1024_3339393565303961.jpg&hash=b564ff162437136d8b95db55d0e8ce00d0ec3c21)

The old screw pans (I don´t know the correct English expression) were deeply washed out by the valve pushrods. They have caused this terrible noise.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F1024_3738613636396361.jpg&hash=d1be7939a48ee8f229fe1a618f9d2a9ae0719d8c)

When  pulling the cylinder head screws tight, something terrible happened. My torque wrench was defect and did not indicate correctly. So I tore off the stud bolt. >:(

The other stud bolt was damaged, too.  :o

I bought two new studbolts and a new torque wrench. Now everything is ok. The engine of my small cow sounds healthier than ever.  :D

@John: it´s great to see you writing in German. I like it, when Americans are interested in our language.  ;)

Dirk, I'm glad you busted a stud instead of pulling the threads out of the engine case!   :o  You must have a very strong crankcase casting!  :)  Oh, glad to have you back...

John,

you´re making a lot of progress in learning German.  :)

So I´ve got a task for you!

These pics are taken from the American BMW advertisment in the early 70th, right after Woodstock.

Look at the funny unsafety-clothing and the helmet of the girl.  ::) Unbelievable! ;D

Most of the German car and motorcycle facturers have a slogan - like "Audi - Vorsprung durch Technik"

Here is my question:

What is the German BMW-slogan?

Es tut mir leid.... Ich weiß nicht!  Ich lesen Deutsche nicht so gut.
