I just rejoined after finding out the old site was gone. I usually do around 3,000 miles a year, and this year...maybe 300 miles. Oh well, this year gota be better. My cat Ignatz is about 20 years old and doing fine, and the R-65 is well preserved in the garage. I hope everyone has a great 2007!..Rob

Welcome back, ignatz!
Glad to hear your cat is well :)
Sorry to hear the bike didn't get out more last year. Any particular reason?
I know my miles would have been low had I not gotten out on the road twice last year.
-
Well, my first excuse would be I overturned my ankle trailrunning. Sounds like a minor deal but I was black +blue from my toes to my calf. Nasty black! So swollen it took weeks to see my ankle bone. I actually bruised the bones from turning it so far. Any way, I spent most of the summer working out in the gym and after 1 year and three months I'm doing better. My last knee surgery was a walk in the park compared to this ankle injury. I also started shooting a revolver in speed combat matches. Something different! I was fencing up until my ankle injury. That sport is so demanding,it will be a while before I do that again. Good to hear from you and everyone on the board!
-
At least you are keeping busy! ;)
I would probably be like Barney Fife in speed revolver shooting, dropping cartridges all over the place!
"You mean I get to put SIX rounds in, Andy? Wow, this is BIG!"
Sorry to hear about your ankle. Your friends will call you "the weatherman" from now on... :'(

Hi Ignatz! Glad you found us.
I'm so sorry to hear about your ankle but glad to hear it is finally healing. Those kinds of injuries are notorious for taking a long time to heal. I hope it will be okay for the 2007 riding season.

Howdy, Ignatz! Good to have you back once again! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
I wondered where your user name "Ignatz" came from, and now I know! ;)
We all look forward to you getting out more on your bike in 2007, and reading your posts!

OK where does Ignatz come from? I'm missing something.
I like trail running and fencing too. How far were you running? My only injury was a torn muscle in the back of my knee, I did it in an 50K ultramarathon with lots of steep muddy hills. A good massage therapist is a Godsend.
Get better!

Hi Ed, I use to do 50k's cause the knuckleheads I run with do 100 milers! I backed off after my knee surgury and started doing 5k's instead. Still I was training on trails, in the rain, flying down a hill, when I overturned my ankle. Fencing definetly had my left accilies sore from pushing off repeatedly. Now its Yoga 5 times a week! I think the yoga and pilates classes I take will help me if I choose to get back into fencing. Fencing is one of the most demanding sports I've ever tried.

Wow, that is deep, ignatz. I will study that some more. It is obvious you are not just a gearhead, but running in the woods in the rain? I am afraid I have not reached that spiritual plateau, yet. Heck, I just discovered the I Ching at 50!
I am also going to check out the Pilates more closely, as my left shoulder (http://www.pbase.com/tomfarr/image/71415054/medium) is still painful to lay on since my crash last May. And even worse, it seems the right shoulder has gone into sympathy with it! :(
You seem to be a rather dedicated athlete, so I ask you, what kind of mattress do you sleep on? Conventional?

Just wanted top chime in here with all the old comrades and say hi to Ignatz! I think he was referring to his cat's name Ed.
Boy all this exercising seems pretty painful. Are you guys sure that in the long run this stuff is good for us???
-
I'm not always willing to devote the required time to training for marathons+, so I only do them every other year or two. Who can make the time to do 100 milers? It also interferes with my riding, as I haven't figured out a way to leave a thousand dollars of leather and helmet on my bike while I'm gone running for two hours, and expect to have it still there intact when I get back. I like knowing I can run 31 miles. There's one here in Oregon in September that I ran in 2005 and loved it:

That's not the one where I injured myself.
It's a good excuse to do the Crater Lake marathon a month before that, too, for a training run. :-)
If you like fencing you might enjoy other martial arts like karate or taekwon do: also very intense workouts, but so facinating that you can't stop. Well, besides the fact that you would get beat up. Just kidding! They are probably better for you as they utilize your body in more versatile ways, not just legs and right arm. Assuming the yoga gets you back strong and limber, of course. I should learn more yoga; I just use it as a warm up for doing my forms.

I don't know if it's good for us in the long run if you just refer to life span, but fitness certainly makes life more enjoyable. I can do more stuff.
My cat only lived to be 18. I miss him.

You guys talk about running 100 miles. :o
I have to get into my mindset before I ride 100 miles!
Sometimes I will park way out in the parking lot at the grocery store. ;)

Yes, Ignatz, 20 years is good for a cat. Our "ancient one" died a couple years ago just a couple months shy of 20...

He's deaf now and I give him thyroid medicine twice a day. My Vet is a fan of Krazy Kat and really likes seeing Ignatz. Its amazing how this thyroid medicine helps him. Its people medicine my wife gets at the local CVS pharmacy. The Asian lady at the checkout counter comments to my wife how nice it is to see we named our daughter "Cat" Naulty. My wife tried to explain to her that it was for our cat and not our daughter, but she still thinks we have a child named Cat! ; :D

Good story, and sounds like your average pharmacy tech [smiley=beehive.gif] (hope we don't have any on the board), smart enough to raise a sea sponge's self esteem. [smiley=Oscar.gif] After working with them every day for the past three years [smiley=wall.gif] I now tripple check every Rx I pick up for personal consumption. :P AND, a lot of the pharmacists aren't much better and some scare me half to death and make me thank god they ain't sacking up my pills... :o
Oh, and tell her that Cat isn't really her name, it's Feline - Cat's just a nickname! [smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]
-
Lots of good stories here! Justin, I love that - Feline! Oh my! Hee hee! [smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]
I thought I was the only one that had trouble with the pharmacy techs. I yelled at one once, then felt bad about it. I was just really tired, but she couldn't help it as she was just, well, let's say she was not the brightest one on that side of the counter. [smiley=huh.gif] The good ones always leave to get a better paying job. I've heard they only get minimum wage.
Ignatz, I tried to read that stuff about "some say it with a brick" , but it was too complicated for me. I never was good at that kind of interpretation of social commentary. I like science and mechanical things myself. ;)
We've got some good athletes here it seems. I did one marathon about 7 years ago. I walked it though. I decided to do something that would help other people and so went with the Leukemia Society Team in Training and went to Anchorage for the Mayor's Midnight Sun Marathon. I actually made it to the end even though I'd come down with bronchitis the night before the walk and didn't realize it. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't breathe. I thought it was just because I was nervous and anxious about walking an unknown trail with about a bizillion other people. But noooooooooo. I had to go and get sick. My coach walked me out so I did make it. Got my bronze medal to prove it. 8-)
I haven't done much since then because of life stuff. And now I'm out of shape. But I've made a resolution and just joined a club to have access to all the equipment for the winter so I can be in shape for next year's riding season. [smiley=clap.gif] The next couple of months are usually the worst weather around here so this should work out rather well as it is not even a mile from where I live.

Marathons.....not for me.
I'm doing a 2.7km ocean swim here in a fortnight. Why? SOunded good at the time.
Seeing as this year was the first time I tried to swim laps since I was at school (and that was only once a year at the swimming carnival), I thought, I'd be alright, that was only 10 years ago. WRONG. First day I managed 2 laps (no goggles, went blind). Then 10 laps, now I'm trawling out 1500m, but 2700m out the back of the surf is a big difference.......
Point is, it was a pleasure being on this forum

I know Rob, but if he has to do it, well he has to. I swim the Columbia every year on Labor Day but the water's way warmer than the ocean, and usually smoother.
I think staying in shape makes it easier to ride. There, on topic!
