I have a subscription to Rider Magazine (one of the better "all brands" magazines out there, IMHO), and in the January '07 issue they have an article on BMW's motorcycle assembly plant in Spandau, Germany (which is near Berlin, I believe). Good article, too! (Especially the part about hand painting the striping on the gas tanks!) Pick up the issue and read the article, if you have the chance.
(PS....The subscription price of only $12 a year is a real bargain, too, and features a monthly column by Clement Salvadori, who, along with Peter Egan of Cycle World are two of the best writers in the business.)

Hi John,
yes Spandau is a suburb in Berlin.
Hand painting the lines on the gas tanks and the mudguards is an art that is allmost extinguished here in Europe. There are still some who do this (spreaded all around Europe) and you can imagine the prices!

Thanks John, I'll check that out. It has been years since I have had a subscription to Rider, but at $12, how can you refuse?
(I might even end up getting hooked again!)
