Been camping in VA for a couple of days with Aida & Graham (Ms. and Mr Buck), Sue Herring (Canada), and me, and we got to talking about the old R65 flag we had back in 2008, and all signed at the R65 gathering we did as part of a larger Airhead Rally in NC. The flag went thru us, then I think to Semper Gumby (Bill), and maybe out to Melena in NorCal? Anyone have a clue where it is these days?
Some old school R65ers with our shiny new flag, June, 2008.

Ms. Buck, the flag, and her spotless '84 R65.
Signed and blurred, due to rain. :(

Sue and me this morning, displaying our transparent flag? :-?

I think the best route, would be to contact Semper Gumby, he is the last person I know that had the flag .
Bill has not been online here in over a year, so I don't know if you will be able to contact him .
If he doesn't respond, let me know, Bill and myself work for the same airline, I thnk I can get a message to him through my employer, his profile at work says he's in the Dallas area, not Atlanta anymore .
If that doesn't work, I sent Melena an email, Sept. 2014, after there was a significant earthquake in the Napa area, so I know at least at that time I had a valid email address for her .
-
Semper G still posts on the Britbike.com forum. If I remember I'll pm him on that forum and ask him about it. If I'm ever on a computer that will let me log in on that site, grr.
-
Anyone have any success contracting Semper G ??
I just sent an email to Semper G, on my company email, hopefully he will respond .
-
I received a response from Semper Gumby this morning, yes he still has the flag, somewhere !!! ;D
Hopefully, he'll find it and get it to whoever wants to hold on to it for now .
-
Thanks for posting the pics Steve! I had great intentions of doing it... It was great getting to meet up with Steve and SueCanada! 8-)
Glad we MAY have relocated the flag as well. Thanks for all the efforts to find it. Maybe we can get it traveling again.
Here's a pic of the three of us at Willville Motorcycle Bike Camp in Meadows of Dan, VA.
-
I asked Bill to make a posting here on R65.org after he ' unearths ' the flag, and see who wants to have possession of the flag now . ;D
-
Fear
Panic
Loathing
and then *Joy* I still have the Flag.
I must needs to send this flag to someone.
Please tell me who. :D
-
Send it to me and I'll get it to the members here in the western US that want to sign it, then make it's way back east .
Also, I will send it to Australia, if any members there would be interested .
I'll send you a PM with my address .
-
I got a PM from Semper Gumby today, the flag is on it's way to me in the northern Sonoran desert of south central Aridzona .
Who wants it sent to them so they can sign it ???
Western US members, or anyone in Australia ??
-
Few pillowcases have traveled so far!
;D
-
I don't think I've signed (or even seen) it. I'll PM you my address.
-
Got your PM Ed, I probably will get the flag on Monday, I usually don't get mail delivery until after 5 PM .
With my work schedule, Tue-Sat, 0600-1830, I most likely won't get it mailed to you until Jun 12 .
-
Well, surprise, the flag showed up today !!!!
Ed Miller, you're signature is on the flag that I have !!
Do you still want the flag sent to you ???????????????? ;D
On the back of the flag, are rallies the flag has been to, I think you probably signed it at the MOA National, in Redmond, OR, July, 2010 .
-
Here's the back of the flag .
-
Here's a view of the front of the flag .
-
Bob,
Thanks for the pics of the front and back of the flag! It's moved around quite a bit... until 2010. I hope we can get it going again. Appreciate you rounding it up and getting it back on it's way again. 8-)
-
It was easy, one well placed email !!!!
I'll make a few more postings to members that may want to sign it and get it on it's way .
I'll hold onto the flag for a month or so and if no one else shows interest, I'll send it back to you Ms Buck .
-
Send it to me, I feel I should sign it! I'll PM you my address...
-
Got your PM Justin, I should get it out tomorrow .
Looks like this ' puppy ' is back on the road again !! :)
-
The flag is on it's way to you Justin .
-
Justin.
When you are done with it, send it to me (I'll help with postage). Petermc and I can sign locally and there is another (non-active) member at Kuranda which is a mere 20km from me. I could then forward to other Oz members and after as many as possible of us have signed, send on to the UK where the next biggest cache of members seems to be.
-
This flag is going to need a passport !!! ;D
-
Got it and signed it!
Tony - PM me your shipping details...
-
If any CONUS members would like to sign the flag PM me with your address and I'll pass that information along with the flag to Tony.
-
Last seen heading for Norway (6 years ago)... anyone know where this one is
Lou
-
Lou,
You sent that flag to me and I sent it on to Trolle in Denmark. He confirmed receiving it and said he would send it on to Bali

Yeah that's my signature. Shows what a good memory I lack. I remember meeting Melana (
can't remember how she spells her name) --saw her name on the flag and fixed my spelling -- and a few others at Redmond. Sue, you didn't make it to that one did you?
I guess I don't need the flag. :-[
-
I can send an email to Trolle, in admin mode, I have access to his email address, if non-admin members cannot access his email address from his profile .
He still appears to be alive, he was last online the first week of January this year .
-
Lou,
You sent that flag to me and I sent it on to Trolle in Denmark.
Nearly Norway.... it was a while ago Barry [smiley=rolleyes.gif]
Lou
-
I just sent an email to Trolle, we'll see what happens now !!! ;D
-
Still haven't heard from anybody CONUS that wants to sign flag. Tony requested I include a couple addresses of CONUS folks when I send. That's all I'm waiting on...
-
You can always send a PM with the addresses .
If no one is interested, then off to the UK it is !!
-
If it gets to my neck of the woods by mid September I can bring it back as I will be visiting my spiritual Lone Star home at the end of the end of September/first week in October. I owe Justin a brew for all his good work.... any excuse.
Lou
-
Two weeks since I sent an email to Trolle and no response from him .
Sent an email to Balibeemer today, he has not been online for over 27 months, I don't have much hope for getting a response from him either .
But I've been proved wrong before .
I just got an email stating that the email address that Balibeemer has on file here, is no longer a valid email address .
Rechecked the address I used and found that I left out one period, resent the message .
Just got another message, the email address in not valid anymore .
This flag may be lost . :(
-
The other one is on it's way to Tony...
-
Tony, has the flag arrived yet ??
-
Bob, I doubt it. First Class to Australia takes forever...
-
Tony, has the flag arrived yet ??
Dunno I am 2,000km from home ATM. Back home tomorrow night (Tuesday), will check post on Wednesday.
-
You on a long ' walk about ' !!! ;D
-
You on a long ' walk about ' !!! ;D
Something like that. My favourite aircraft museum had an "open cockpit" weekend last weekend. By chance it coincided with my father's sister's 80th birthday so I flew south and drove him up to a small city called Bundaberg to go to her birthday lunch. Drove back to my father's home that night and then got up the next morning and went to QAM.
Flying home tonight.
Been a pretty "social" week because the previous weekend my wife and I rode down to the town of Cardwell which is neatly 1/2 way between Cairns and Townsville for the annual get-together of the Cairns and Townsville motorcycle restorers clubs - I will post some photos in the next few days.
Tomorrow reality intrudes and I'll have to do some work.
-
Tony,
I am in Brisbane and there is Michael in Sydney. A few others around as well.
-
The flag has arrived!
I will contact Peter to arrange a time for flag signing and attempt to contact the inactive member at Kuranda.
Then, subject to agreement from Justin I will forward to Burt, possible on-fowarding to Sydney/Melbourne and then either back to CONUS or as agreed.
-
Glad it got there so fast! Just pass it around over there and get as many to sign on as want to.
-
Well Petermc, my wife and I have signed the flag, haven't heard from the member in Kuranda so the flag is ready for the next stage of its journey.
Happy to send to Burt in Brisbane next, then perhaps on to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide etc.
BUT the honour of Australia is at stake, don't ask for the flag to be sent to you unless you are prepared to pay the postage to send it on and to send it on quickly.
When the flag has done the rounds and is ready to be sent to the UK (or wherever) so that the last person holding it doesn't get the big postage cost I am happy to contribute and I am sure others will to.
SO - Burt, what is your mail address please?
-
Here is a photo of the flag signed by Petermc, my partner Sylvia and myself. Technically Sylvia isn't a member of r65.org but she joins in vicariously and her r65 has featured in a number of photos I've posted.
-
How about a pic of you and your better half with the flag, Tony?
-
How about a pic of you and your better half with the flag, Tony?
Sorry I've got the flag downstairs in my office and am too lazy to go get it.
Here however are some photos:
1/. Sylvia and R65 in approximately 1984 at Bamaga, a small town at the tip of Cape York
2/. Sylvia on her now red R65/80 enroute to the Lions Den Hotel last year
3/. Me with my R65 last year at the Lions Den - I'm scowling cause I hate photocalls and it was about to rain -little did I realize ti would rain 25" overnight and it would take me several hours to get the BMWs that were park outside overnight running again.
4/. Sylvia with her new G650GS last year.
5/. G650 & KLE500
-
I would suggest PMing address to Tony. Although I have "harvesters" blocked it never is a good idea to post an address in the open...
-
Tony, Justin asked for my address a few weeks ago to send it to you with the R65.org flag, so you should have it.
If the last AU member that signs it, sends to me, I'll send it on to the UK, to reduce the postage costs for AU members .
-

I do have it!
I'm waiting a couple of more days for someone else in Australia to ask for it to be sent to them, if not response I'll send it to you.
-
Tony, after all AU members that are interested in putting their name on the flag, whom ever sends it to me, use the most cost efficient method . ( Message in a bottle !!)
After this flag goes to the UK, then back to the US, it's travelling days are just about over, there doesn't appear to be much interest in this, by most members here on R65.org .
If it takes 4 weeks or longer to get to me, I have no problem with it, there is no sense of urgency about this .
If you choose the message in a bottle method, let me know, I have quite a few friends on the west coast of California, I'll ask them to keep an eye out for it !! ;D
-
Tony,
PM sent. If you just stick it in an empty stubbie bottle and throw it off the beach, I'll wait a couple of days and it should float by. ;)
Dave.
-
So, any R65 riders in New South Wales interested in getting together and signing this flag? Good excuse to meet up and talk bikes :)
Sydney signing and coffee ride?
-
The flag will leave for Burt's place today.
-
This flag is doing well considering 2 months ago it was labelled invisible by Aida, Steve and me!! Well done all you R65er's! Wish we could have found Trolle. :(
-
Glad to see you are still alive and kicking, Sue!
-
Burt has PM'd me and confirmed receipt of the flag. By now it is probably on its way to Sydney, perhaps Burt or Michael can confirm.
-
Still in Brisbane. Just awaiting confirmation from Michael.
-
Seven days have passed Burt and Michael - where is the flag?
-
If it hasn't left Australia yet Tony or Michael send it to New Zealand, PM me.
-
Michael must be away from the forum at the moment. Give it a couple of days and then I'll forward it across the pond.
-
Don't get in a hurry to get the flag on it's was back to the US/UK .
Like I said in an earlier post, after the flag returns to the US from Europe, it probably won't be doing too much traveling .
-
Well, I popped the flag in the post today, so it should be winging its way over the ditch to Tunnelrider in NZ very soon.
-
Anyone know where the flag is now ???
-
Anyone know where the flag is now ???
Tunnelrider was online today. He should have it.
-
The flag arrived in New Zealand after a bit of a delay in the postal system. We thought it may be lost but all is well.
For some reason I cannot post a photo but flags are okay ...
-
OK just wondered where it was no posts for about 5 weeks, was concerned that it may have been lost .
-
When the flag finally makes it home can someone please take some high-definition photos and put them up please.
-
I think MsBuck will do that when the flag gets returned to her when it's travelling is done .
She made the flag a few years ago .
-
Yep, I'll be glad to make a photo and post it up when it finally settles in back home. I'll keep it in a safe place for further traveling if the need ever arises.
This has been really fun watching it travel across the world! ;D 8-)
-
It sure has Aida! I just don't get on line here enough so I just finished reading all the posts....good memories go with that flag :)
-
Ahh yes don't worry the flag is in NZ, I'm wanting to get it on a pole and take it for a photo ride! And see if any one else will sign it here. I'll send it on soon... Motu are u out there?
-
Warms my heart seeing the flag travel hither and yon. :D
-
Any update on the whereabouts of the flag ???
Two months of silence !!! ;D
-
Any chance the flag may make it to Des Moines Iowa this summer (winter in Aus) for MOA national rally
-
Yep for sure Mrclubike, I've been holding onto the flag in the hope they'll finish doing roadworks outside the tunnel entrance so I could get a photo riding by with the flag, but it's still a worksite and I've been holding onto the flag for too long, sorry!
Where shall I send the flag to next?
Cheers,
Dan
-
Shall I send the R65 flag to you Mrclubike?
Unless someone who wants to sign it in the Southern Hemisphere pipes up I think it'd be best for it to head north.
-
Hey Dan, we have a few months before the rally that Mrclubike spoke of. Middle of July. Hopefully they will finish work on the tunnel before then?
http://www.bmwmoa.org/news/344127/Des-Moines-is-the-Winner-for-2018.htm
-
Hey guys, look what I just found.
I'm not sure where it came from, but I was cleaning up my old Photobucket account, and there it was. Sue on the left, SCJJ John on the right, and I'm not sure about the 2 guys in the middle. It's tagged R65 group '09, which was after Aida created the flag and some of us met and signed it in '08. No clue where this was taken, or by whom!
-
I think the second person from the left, is Semper Gumby .
-
Hmm, I'm not sure if that's Semper, aka Bill Gould, or not. He's a tall guy, but lanky, and this fellow looks a little heavier; when I bumped into Semper at a Moto Guzzi rally 2-3 years ago he looked about the same as in '08.
Btw, I think I've managed to restore most of my original photos at the beginning of this thread. Still looking for ways to defeat the evildoers at Photobucket.
Here's the 1st pic that started all this, with Semper being the tall guy in the red hat. We were all mere children!
-
Okay, the mystery has been solved, by our very own Ms Buck (Aida). She writes on Facebook,
"2009 BMW MOA National Rally in Johnson City, TN
A few of the R65ers gathered in Johnson City including (left to right) SueCanada (Sue), nhmaf (Mike), R65Guy (Neil), and SCJJR65 (John)."
-
Hi MrClubike and Rob,
The works outside the tunnel continue and I'd better get the awesome flag away so you guys can enjoy it. Give me an address or PM me and I'll get it on it's way so it'll make the MOA rally. I've got a mate from NZ in Des Moines, I'm yet to make it there to visit, sounds like a nice place.
Nice historical pics NC Steve, a lot more signs on it now!
Cheers,
Dan
-
Gee I am in an historical pic!! Guess that makes sense....sigh...
I have signed up for Des Moines but worry a bit about getting there. LRB not on the road yet...I want to replace the 0-ring under the M/C front brake reservoir and maybe while I am trying to figure how to do that right, I could ask about replacing the piston assembly there on that brake while I am at the first job? I am sketchy about doing the latter. I have asked Monte to help out with instructions so I await his answer. I am tempted to try riding the 1988 new-to-me Honda NX250 out to Des Moines given time to go slower. I just like less weight nowadays. But LRB (R75LS with white wheels!!) deserves to go... LRB hasn't run for 1.5 years but he has been well stored I think but I bet he has something in store for me to have to fix....sitting is NOT his best suit. He may surprise me and take pity on my fragile stress levels though. He is the sensitive type, you know.
-
Sue, Monte doesn't seem to hang out here anymore since we had some very irritating forum issues that finally turned out to be host related. But, on a lighter note there are plenty of other wrenches here that can help out.
-
Hi guys, I'd better get this flag on it's way from the depths of a getting colder south hemisphere so it makes it to Des Moines in time. Who wants to take it? I believe Rob and MrClubike were the last to mention it going to the MOA rally, Sue. PM me an address someone and I'll send it on to it's next adventure.
.I want to replace the 0-ring under the M/C front brake reservoir and maybe while I am trying to figure how to do that right, I could ask about replacing the piston assembly there on that brake while I am at the first job? I am sketchy about doing the latter.
Hi Sue, it's not too hard a job to replace the m/c piston for the first time. You'll need to buy a m/c overhaul kit, the same size as the diameter of the piston, stamped into the underneath of the cast m/c. body. Good job you mention the reservoir o ring, annoyingly they don't come with the overhaul kit so get a couple o rings while you're ordering.
Syringe the brake fluid from the reservoir, put a small hose over the caliper bleed nipple into a jar, loosen the caliper bleed nipple and let the fluid flow out, loosening the brake hose nut at the m/c. Let a bit out while taking the brake handle lever off at the pivot then disconnect the hose and take off the m/c.
To remove the m/c dust boot, there is either a circlip or washer to remove first, my memory fails me sorry. Once the circlip is removed all the parts come out straight forward, there aren't many, just keep them in order.
I reused my original return spring as it was firmer than the rebuild kit spring.
Any corrosion needs to be washed out. Coat the new piston rubbers, o ring and m/c inside barrel in brake fluid before reassembly and remember to firstly put a thick cloth over your tank and guard to protect from fluid drips (beer or brake) :)
Here's a schematic of the handle bar m/c assembly:

Thank you tunnelrider!
-
Hmmmm July in Des Moins you say....
-
Hey! Great photo of the Johnson City gang. Delbert McClinton playing in the background as I remember. I will be at the Des Moines rally. We need to get together for a toast and flag signing ceremony. I can take the flag if no one else has spoken for it yet. I have 2 years listed on it, time to add a 3rd. Sue and I toasted the club at the Salem, OR rally :D
-
Thanks for your PM R65Guy, I'll start the R65 flag on it's way back across the equator in the next couple of days.
-
Thanks tunnelrider. The flag has certainly had an exciting year of travels!
Neal
-
I now have the flag! Next stop will be BMWMOA national rally in Des Moines.
-
Glad the flag made it ok, quite quickly too. Enjoy the action at the rally Neal and safe travels to fro.
Dan
-
The flag will soon be on its way to Des Moines. Please see my post in Ride Reports and Event Reviews section for more info.
Neal
-
Reviving this thread since the next MOA National is coming up in June. Any idea where the flag is at this point? If whoever has it is planning on attending the MOA National in Lebanon, TN this year, please bring it. Otherwise, can it be sent to me so I can get it there?
-
Hi Aida,
There were no other members at Des Moines so it came back home with me. I still have the flag and I do plan on bringing it to Lebanon, TN! Hopefully we will have a get together sometime. I will leave the flag in your capable hands for it's next journey :)
Thanks,
Neal
-
It will be good to try to get a reunion of sorts setup for this year. I am going to start working on my wife to get some time off to head to Tennessee, wish me luck!
-
Neal, so glad to here you plan to be there this year! Sounds promising for quite a little group. It will be good to meet up with everyone again after such a long time, and meet some new faces as well! 8-)
-
Just curious where the flag is now !!
-
Well, I didn't make the rallies, so I don't have it. :-\
-
Hi Aida!
I still have the flag! I've taken it to the last 2 rallies but no one else showed up :( I plan on being at Great Falls and will definitely be at Springfield in 2022. 10 mile trip for me  I can take the flag if so desired.
If you would like to retire it I think that would be a wonderful idea before it becomes lost forever! It goes back several years as you know. I can mail it to you if you like and you can either re-launch it or retire it. If so, send me a private message (My Messages at the top of the page) with your mailing address and I will mail it to you!
Thanks,
Neal
-
I think it would be a good idea to send it back to Aida and if someone goes to a rally or other gathering send it off with the understanding that when the gathering is over send it right back, not letting it sit for years .
-
Hi there all! Good plan about returning the flag to Aida.
Then to send it to whatever rally we get to then back for
safe keeping with Aida. I am in fair contact with
Aida so will let her know da Plan!
Btw, I am well :vrolijk_26: but not riding much since pandemic grounded things.
Plans now forming to get to Springfield, MO. See R65 Guy again! The heat
scares me though......but I love to camp!
-
Hi Sue,
I will put in a request for cool weather for the Rally next year 8) Great to hear you are doing well!
I sent you a private message (PM) for some information......
Neal
