Title: r65 starter motor
Post by: latala1 on July 01, 2018, 03:52:34 PM
I have a 1984 R65 and recently had problems re starting
on examination i found that the origional bosch unit had failed cheapest price in the uk was £230 got one from the states for £65 plus post and carriage took about two hours to change
love the bike even more than my R80 it was for me a better balance the only down side with the R65 is that vibration is worse at 70 mph  which is where i would like to be 60 to slow 80 to fast
this is my second R65 the first one was a 79 model  with points and a heavy fly wheel

is worse at 70

Mine seems a little nervous at 70. 80 seems like I'm flogging it.

Tony Smith here on the site is about to install a taller rear drive in his R65...............am waiting for a report on his experience. He is also going to more cc's so his report might be apples and oranges for us

The starters can be repaired, at least in the US, parts are readily available .
Not a difficult job to do .
After 37 years and about 90,000 miles, 145,000 km, I can't detect the vibration band anymore .
Engine must be finally broken in !!!! ;D

When I have a vibration on my '86 R-65 it is usually the throttle cables are not balanced … one carb is pulling more than the other. Just my $.02

i think its a well known characteristic of an otherwise perfect bike
its is for me
carbs are balanced and at 60- 65 it a charm but that puts me right into the speed band of lorries and trucks on the highway
this model has always been a favourite of mine in my nearly 50 year long  riding career

I'm currently 2,000km from home for work and likely to be here a while. As usual my plans to modify the R65 have been sacrificed to the God of work!
