Title: Sagging Centre Stand
Post by: Crossrodes on May 23, 2008, 08:05:00 AM
I ordered new springs for the centre stand.  When I went to install them they appeared to be too long.  I checked the part number and it is correct.  So what is the problem???

Looking at the metal swivel piece that the spring attaches to I noticed that it slides up and down.  It may be that the piece has elongated the slot over the years.  Has anyone had this problem?  The part I'm speaking of is number 17 in this diagram:

If you look at part 18 there are two lengths of spring - which one did you get? Perhaps you got the longer one but need the shorter.

Actually it looks like there are 3 lengths of spring.  Two for 1982 and later models and one for models prior to 1982 (Mine is a '79).  I went out and measured the lengths of the new springs and both are 100 mm.  Since the pre '82 model length is not specified I'm guessing that I have the correct length spring.  Could it be that the slot in the attachment bracket has elongated with wear over the years?

The "slot" is supposed to be there and I don't think (if memory serves correctly) there is enough material to be able to wear enough to cause you any problems as it would fall off first! ;)
