Title: Saying hello
Post by: skippyc on December 13, 2015, 12:49:32 AM
Hi I am introducing myself I come from Victoria Australia. I have had bikes since 1973 but was bike less for a number of years and have gotten back to them 5years ago when I bought a BSA B50 then a cheap Kawaka z200.
The only bikes I regret sell were a Vincent shadow and a 75/5 bmw.
So I was looking at a 25 plus year old bike to put on a club permit. I liked the 75/6 bm but they are hard to come buy at my price, so I got a 1986 R65 instead.

Welcome from Far north Queensland.

I have to say that I also fell into R65 riding by accident (thought it would be a quick fixer-upper while i did other things) but I have to say that the littlest BMW does have its charms.

Bienvenidos from Texas -where the seasons are flipped from Down Under.

Nice looking mono-shocker you have there. And thanks for the photos of your other bikes.

G'day Skippy! Welcome to the Aussie mob at R65.org. Amazing how many are turning up here.

Your "new" bike looks very smart in black and the photos of your earlier rides are a nice bit of nostalgia.

Thanks guys. its a new world for me as I only ever had 1 problem with the 75/5 and that was the drive shaft, it spun in the taper.

Aha! A man after my own heart. I hate that tapered joint with a cold burning hatred as I have had two come loose on me over the years. Others laugh at me because THEY have never had a problem.

IMLHO it was a case of BMW saying "we can do this, so lets". Why oh why couldn't they have used a splined joint like everyone else?

And whilst we are on the topic, would a gearbox input shaft spigot bearing have killed them? or perhaps two opposed universal joints in the drive shaft instead of the rinky-dink way they went about it.

Growl snarl etc....I reckon I'm entitled to be grumpy on the above topics, been riding the rotten things since 1978 [but I really do love them for other reasons].

And I haven't even mentioned ATE single sided calipers - BMW were the first manufacturer to fit twin disc front brakes because a single ATE single sided is less effective than the lovely drum it replaced.

You must be jynxed, Tony.  I got my first Beemer, a '73 R60/5 Silver Toaster, in 1976.  Other than a CB450 Honda and a Yamaha Virago all I have ever owned have been Beemers and I've never had the problem you have been plagued with!  Of course, I probably will on my next ride now that I've crowed about it...

Sharp '86, similar paint scheme to mine, and the decals are in much better shape to boot.  Doesn't look like the stock silencers though.

Don't know what the silencers are they are welded in and they produce a good note
