Title: hello, new member from Spain, r45/1979
Post by: sfrtz on July 10, 2014, 04:25:47 PM
Hello all,
My name is Sébastien,  I'm french, but living in Barcelona, Spain.

I bought a 79 R45 recently, and this is my first "serious" bike after 6 years of Vespa.
The Bmw needs some care and love...
I'm still in full learning curve, and I'm sure I will find useful info in this forum.

Bonjour Sebastien!

Vous etes parmi vos amis dans ce forum, ici.

We do not often get to see the R45, but we do have some members with them (and they have so many similarities) that I am sure that we can be of some help.

-Mike

Lovely sunny weather you have there, Sebastien! In these buzy streets/roads and climate, a 2 "legged" friend is a blessing.

Lots of happy kilometres to you.

Thanks Shutterpilot!

Yes Arvo A, weather here allows me to use the bike everyday to go to work (about 20km distance twice a day), o feel very lucky for that.

I see from your avatar you have short mirrors on standard bars, correct? Is it convenient for visibility?

A note to Arvo...

Not sure about Arvo's view with his mirrors, but I have Euro bars and very similar glass.

I can assure you that they provide a most excellent view... mostly of my armpits. It's a common squawk, so check those mirrors (trust) but turn your head (verify).

Thanks Montmil  ;D

I can live with that, trust and check, I do it with any vehicle anyway.

My cheap bar end mirrors with slightly convex glass have served me well.  Great view sans-armpits, they help a bit with vibration, and the view forward is less cluttered.

+1 on the bar end mirrors. I am running clipon bars and nothing else gives me a rearward view.

I have to chuck my elbow in a bit to get a perfect view from the mirror. I do see the picture with my elbow in half of the glass if I do not chuck it in.

Matter of taste. You can always put bigger, higher mirrors which give you more and better angle of view. But you have to compromise that with the aestetics of the bike. So the perfect lies somewhere in between ;)

Welcome and Nice bike!

I'm one of the lucky few here in the States with an R45.

Thanks all for your answers.
I bought the short mirrors already, fit well to the "american" bars.
In some months I'll change to "european bars" anyway.

DeeG, I see you own several R, two of them "normal" frame. My question: I find the my R45 quite noisy, and it may be normal as we have to quite rev up for normal riding, but I'm not sure it's not because my silencers are "tired" or something else: is your R45 much noisier than yuour R80 or R75?

Regards,

Sébastien

Sébastien,

If I recall correctly, they all sound about the same.  Noise level, that is.  Right now I have the carbs off the R75 for rebuild, and I'm taking the heads off the R45, as it is burning a lot of oil on the left side.

With it's original factory silencers my R45 was very quiet.
Almost all aftermarket silencers are nosier some substantially so. I had to add some baffles to a pair of Sito silencers to reduce the noise level.

You might also be hearing induction noise and possibly the "Turkey gobble" noise from the engine breather. I have reduced induction noise by blocking of the rear perforations on the air filter housing that face the battery. I don't believe it causes any problems as an R45 is unlikely to need more air than can be supplied by the aperture in the top cover.

Hi again Barry ;)

Thanks! I think THIS is my "problem", I find it quite noisy compared to other 2V boxers I see in the street, and I think this is the point.
I hearthe turkey too, but this annoys me less than the general noise, comming from the silencers.

Any picture or description of your baffles available?

Regards,

Sébastien
