Spent a couple days this week assisting a friend in getting his 1978 R100/7 back into a safe and roadworthy condition. The bike is quite the bone-stock beauty but deferred maintenance created a lengthy Tech Daze list which included: New Metzler tires, tubes and balance; front disc pads and adjustment of the ATE caliper; new brake hose; MC clean out, flush n' bleed; engine, trans, drive shaft and final drive lubes; oil filter; new battery; replace all fuel lines; rear brake shoes; final drive splines cleaned and greased; and a new air filter.
The air filter was pretty much the last item before an afternoon road test. Pulling off the clam shell cover revealed a mouse's informal digs. Cozy nest and plenty of his droppings to clean out. The up-side is the rich running condition went away!
Props to Mike "Bengt Phorqs" Crenshaw for riding his R90-S lookalike north to Denton, in the rain, to assist. We did get beer and pizza for our efforts plus a huge smile from the Slash Seven's owner when he returned from a test ride.
Another Airhead is back on the road.

I suspect that the tool roll on the front mudguard is going to do a mischief to the headlight alignment. but aside from that - lovely for a naked bike.

Gently suggesting that the fork-mounted tool roll be donated to a homeless H-D rider. There are also gin-u-wine BMW hard bags in the garage.
Not a concho and latigo fan for my scoots. ::)

Good job! It's always good to see an airhead back where it belongs....on the road. Dress or undress it as you please. We all personalize our bikes to our own taste. I think the bags add character.
My first set of "saddle bags" for my brand new "81 R100 were actually saddle bags. I also had a $25 windschield both of which did not please my newly found "friends". Enjoy the ride.

David was really happy to have his bike running again. It is wonderful condition and has many miles ahead of it. I'm not a fan of chrome and leather either but the nice thing about bikes is we can all personalize them to our own satisfaction.

Follow up on the R100/7:
Gotta call today from the owner. Said he thought he had, "A clutch problem", so I dropped by and did the due diligence on the cable and trans mechanical bits. No issues found, so fired it up for a test ride...
Clutch in, snicked into bottom gear and fed out the clutch lever. Nope. Not a clutch problem. Took less than 25-feet to discover the real problem. A most terrible sound, chattering n' shuddering you would not want o hear and feel.
After replacing the mouse nest clogged air filter, the engine, according to the owner, had a lot more power. No doubt since the R-one-hunert could breath properly. However, a couple days of brisk riding finished off the already heavily worn final drive splines.
Owner's now looking for a 33/11 final drive plus an 18-inch snowflake wheel -both with decent splines. See the listing in Trading Post.
Any help for my buddy would be much appreciated.

Just pitiful. This crown gear spline unit is being shipped off to Bud Provin's Nickwakett Garage for replacement. Unsure how many PO's neglected to provide just a little love on the final drive splines. Amazingly, the rear wheel cup spines show only the smallest evidence of wear. Bud Provin told me the the cup splines will outlast a couple or so FDU splines.
