I looked at the website and it appears that they don't sell motorcycle batteries. Any other suggestions?

Anybody know the dimensions of the OEM battery for the 65LS?

They sure do.

Here's your R65's battery and all the specs. Exact per OEM requirements.

Just don't tell your motorcycle or he may be upset that you didn't buy an over priced "motorcycle battery".  ::)

Shop wisely. Ride with more jungle in your pocket.

Thanks again. I looked at the link in the R65 Forum Discount at Gruber Power - AGM Batteries section above and didn't find it. Thought perhaps it changed. My bad.

As far as a discount, it's not automatic; you'll have to ask for it. Unsure if they are still offering one.

Oops! :-[  Did not mean for William to ride "commando". That should be "jingle" not "jungle". Good catch, Matt.

Rather than modify/correct my posting spelling error, gonna leave it as is for the fun factor.

Here's another option for US members.

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11909407

Back ordered at this moment .

I've seen them at Radio Shack for $45, so keep an eye on this site .

Usually free shipping .

I don't know if they deliver to your home, or nearest Radio Shack store .

May, or may not be a better deal than Gruber, you'll have to decide that for yourself .

Gruber is local for me, so I just get the batteries from them .

All of my bikes have them .

I have them delivered to my work place and I get whole sale cost $21 each .

With the short service life of batteries here in the desert, I won't pay anymore for a battery, they seem to last the same amount of time, no matter which one you get .

Does anyone know anything about the Chrome brand AGM batteries that Sears carries? They have a 20amp hour one for $62 with free shipping.

And Chrome has this 18 amp hour one for $47.85 with free shipping: http://www.chromebattery.com/ytx20-bs-high-performance-power-sports-battery.html

I bought a "Chrome" AGM battery for my Triumph as they had the exact specs I needed. Worked fine until the day it died eight months after purchase.  >:( Received a replacement under warranty but will not be buying another.

Gruber and Staab batteries have provided my Airheads with excellent service.

I just checked the shipping for the Staab - $15. That makes it a pretty sweet deal. I think that's what I will go with when I give up on the BMW battery. I'm pretty close.

Here's one I haven't heard much about.  I'm very impressed with mine after 5 years.  I'll be buying another ... when it's time.

That looks like a pretty good deal, Mike. I think the BMW gel battery is made by Deka and is about $200!

I couldn't be happier with my Deka Steve.  And dealing with John Rayski at EME is always a pleasure.

Thanks all. Silly question, but do the Grubers require a special charger or something?
Title: Re: Battery Suggestions?
Post by: Bob_Roller on May 10, 2014, 12:59:21 PM
No special charger is needed for their batteries .

I use Harbor Freight battery maintainers, if the bike is going to sit for a few weeks between being ridden .

I've always wondered about motorcycle batteries requiring a special charger, let's face it, a motorcycle charging system is not the most stable charging system there is !!!! ;D ;D

You won't need to charge it often if at all as they have a very low self discharge rate. I've monitored my new battery carefully and it's not needed any additional top up charging at all. I'm in much lower temperatures than Bob though and that makes a big difference to self discharge rates. If you are going to charge it this is what you need to know.

The thing with any VRLA battery (and both AGM and Gel are VRLA's) is that they are more sensitive to overcharging than a wet cell. So the No1 rule is not to over charged them.

Valve regulated means they are sealed but still have a safety vent and if overcharged they will gas off through that vent.  Overcharging for long enough will kill the battery as unlike a wet cell what comes out of the vent can't be put back in again.

So to make sure it's not overcharged it's best not to use an unregulated battery charger. A simple automatic charger that limits the maximum output voltage to something like 14.5 volts will be fine if the battery really needs charging otherwise a regulated float charger at 13.5 - 13.8 volts could be left connected between use.

I pulled the trigger on the Deka from Euromotoelectrics this morning. With 2 day shipping it was under a hundred bucks. I sure hope it comes before I leave for the Downeast Rally Friday Morning.

Have fun at the rally!  I've been meaning to go to that rally for some years now, but always, something comes up - and it has again this year.  Once of these years I'm just going to have to dive in and say "I'm getting my first lobstah of the season this weekend and to heck with everything else!"
