Title: Any Chance of a Appalachian Getogether This Year?
Post by: Rob Valdez 79 R65 on March 05, 2014, 11:41:53 AM
I am having a renewed interest in motorcycle camping.  I am getting a larger tent and some other luxuries, like a roll-a-cot.

It would be nice to see Aïda, Sue, and many of the others, both old & new on the Eastern half of the U.S.

To make it easier for the New England Guys, we could find a place in N.E. Pennsylvania!  I know the area well and I am itching to get back.

"Gathering of the Clans" is always a good Airhead (in general) rally.
That's where we met up as the R65 group a few years back.

The BMW rally in Cass, WVA is always a great one!
Here's a somewhat older link

There will probably be something going on at the Blue Ridge Mountain Campground, an absolutely wonderful place, to visit or for a rally. Guzzi has their NC rally there in August.

Then there's also the Boone, NC rally, and several more in the general area...

The Meadows on Dan area in VA is Willville, another classic motorcycles-only campground. Aida and Graham turned me onto this a few years back.

Twin Valley Riders out of Roanoke have an annual rally there as well. They're technically a BMW charter, although all brand are welcome and well represented. Another great group of folks.

The Ural group comes thru in June-what a great group they are!

Northeast Pa is basically my backyard.  I can easily do there and back in a day.  I don't know the area real well, but there has to be a lot of places in the Poconos.

Appalacahia is a possibily this year.  I am thinking on doing a trip to New Mexico, and could head down through Appalachia.  It would be largely a matter of timing - whether it would fit in with the trip to New Mexico.

This year, I feel that I will have to do *SOMETHING*.  Last year, I only went to our local New Hampshire club's rally, in which we only had about 25 people (it was rainy, and about 40F, but at least it didn't snow on us like it did in a previous year....   this is in September, BTW).

I want to go the the MOA rally in Minnesota, but the wife is already making serious noises about me being gone for that long, and it ain't pretty.   So, perhaps something in the east like in PA or VA or West VA or NC would work better for me.   I also see that the KAwasaki Concours Owners Group national rally is in Johnson City, TN this summer, too.   But, I'd like to meet up with our gang more than the COGgers if I had to choose between them

Well, duh!

I am planning on going to the Boxerworks get together in Missouri in May.  That is what got me to thinking about this.

Some personal friends own a campground in PA:

They have yet to get a website up - something I am going to help them with, I think.

The BMW RA rally is at Barber Motor Speedway this year: how cool is that? The trip itself is the experience of a lifetime!

And PS Rob: I have pics of the Gathering of the R65s some years back if you want to see them. I also ran into Semper Gumby at the NC Guzzi rally last summer, riding his BSA home from New England  8-)

There's always the joint BMW/Guzzi rally in August, and the Mass Guzzi rally itself. All brands and creeds are always welcome.
Here's a blurb to 2012 joint rally from the Guzzymeister, I'm too lazy to look up the rest!

"It is time again for our major New England Rally, co-sponsored by the MA, CT/RI, and NH MGNOC reps.  It is held in conjuction with our BMW friends in the Yankee Beemer Club.  The rally is held August 2-5 in scenic Heath, MA."

Does one have to be an Airhead member to attend the Gathering of the Clans?

Hi Steve -

Thanks for that link -- but you're being a little "too" helpful in keeping me close to home!    I'd like to have to ride for a day or two to get to a rally rather than just toodle a couple hours down the road!  ;D

I can probably swing being gone for  a few days - but if I was heading to Minnesota I'd want it to be at least 7-10 days, and therein lies the rub..

Nope, I've been going to the Gathering for years, and only joined the Airhead group about a year ago.

Yeah, but how about not being a member and showing up on a Honda???

This sounds like fun, I hope to be able to make at least one of these trips this summer.  :)

Well, the Gathering is held in a motorcycle-only public campground, and there are always lots of other Non-Gathering motorcyclist. The Gathering itself  includes a couple of meals, the 50/50 contest, door prizes, etc. I've been twice on a Guzzi (which is also an airhead)  [smiley=beatnik.gif]), but I guess if anyone asked, you could always say you were between BMWs and riding the Honda. I haven't done so at the Gathering, but I've been to 2 other BMW rallies on the Honda ST1300 I was riding a couple of years ago.

The last two years at Clans, Stephen and friends camped next to us and they rode Tigers. They were welcomed.
Rally starts on Friday. Saturday night meal is included in price. Coffee in the mornings and Friday and Saturday night camping also included. Usually on Thursday and Friday night food is available for a donation or maybe a set price. Home made beer was supplied with a kitty to offset cost of brewing.
Plenty of room for R65 to set up their own area.
June 13-15.

Ah, but fine microbrewery suds though, not homemade.
The good stuff ;) Take a stein, and fill it often!

I'm a bit slow responding, but Mrbuck and I are planning to do more trips this year if we can.  We are up at Willville quite regularly, but think doing the Gathering this year is a great idea.  We'll put that one on the calendar.

Depending on my "employment status", I will try to get up that way this summer. It would indeed be great to see everyone once again!  ;)

John, I forgot, you weren't there when we had our little R65 Meet & Greet a few years back! It's a pretty good deal rally-wise, when you 1st go in and register you pay $40, and you get a goodie bag, usually with an Airheads shop rag, maybe a key chain, etc.

Your 40 bucks covers 2 nights of camping, and you also get 2 tickets to cover your dinner Friday & Saturday nights, as well as another ticket for the door prize drawings on Sat. night. There are dozens of prizes, & the organizers try to make sure everyone wins something. There is also a half & half drawing that tickets are sold for if you're interested; last year the winner took home about $250! Breakfast is available Sat. & Sun. mornings for purchase separately if you want to buy, but bagels and donuts and coffee are also put out for free. Oh, and 2 kegs of good microbrew or imported beer are set about Friday & Saturday afternoons around 4:00, no charge - bring a mug!  8-)

Keep in mind though that there are NO stores, gas stations, etc, for 15+ miles from the campground, which itself is in the middle of nowhere, so anything you might need for the weekend, you'd better carry in, although trips to Boone and Wilkesboro can be a good ride on Saturday. Also worth mentioning is there are toilet and bath house facilities that are kept fairly well stocked and clean; you know how campgrounds can be. Laundry is also available if needed. Sunday it's time to leave at your leisure. Come on down, or up, or over! :)
