Title: 1979 R65
Post by: HESIMEUSTIC on August 31, 2013, 09:49:32 PM
Hi everyone,
new to the forum, have owned my bike since 1999.  It's been in storage for the past few years and just getting it going again so was happy to find this forum as I'm going to need to spend some time cleaning the carbs and finding a replacement battery.
Regards,
Donovan

First time I saw a 79' with dome tops, the whole bike looks awesome.  :)

Welcome to the herd Donovan.

Here's a couple batteries that are used by myself and several other forum members. Both drop right in.

Thanks - I've ordered the UB-12220V and now drained the gas from the tank.  Carbs are up next.  I'm still finding my way around the forum but have a feeling I'm going to want to change the brake pads, possibly look at the suspension as my next things after it's running again.
Thanks for the warm welcome.

We have a couple members who are not far outside of Toronto, including Suecanada (her forum name) who are a friendly group - also members of a  Canadian Vintage motorcycle club..

Thanks, John.  Waiting on a new battery now - have fresh fuel in.  Maybe I could be in touch if doesn't run 100% within a few days?

Hey all, new battery went in, started up like a champ. Even idles OK although I'm sure it could use a tune up.  Here is a quick video I took with my phone:

Not sure - it's maybe a Canadian market thing?  Does anyone else's R65 have this?

No lines on the UK speedometer.

I have the same lines at 50 km/h on my speedo.

As far as I can tell, someone told me it's the maximum speed the bike can go at 1st gear. It's kinda like a guide when shifting down.

The bike sounds sweet!

Hey all - all licensed, insured and had a great ride tonight with a fellow air-cooled twin.  Glad to be back on the road!

What did you think of the Guzzi?  I've long thought this was one of the better looking production bikes these days - at least the stone (racer is a tad flashy for my tastes).

It looked great - I didn't ride it if that's what you're asking.  It's my neighbour's bike.  It was a bit loud with full termi exhausts but looked the bit and likely handled a little nicer than the old R65!

Don't fool yourself.  Good tires and shocks, everything set up right (steering head/swingarm bearings), on a twisty road the twin-shock R65 will hold it's own.

And some of those Guzzi's were pretty poor handlers from the factory - the Sport 1100, for one.  But that was a while ago (last century!).  ;)

Your bike looks brand new and sounds great [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif] I noticed your idle speed is right on the money, welcome to the forum and have fun with your Guzzi friend. Dave 2

Best of luck with your R65. I also have a 79, original trim, and it's a lovely ride and pretty easy to look after. I think you'll get a lot of fun!

Sent my front brake off to Spiegler, like new again.  Just need to find some time to install it now.

Those Spiegler guys do great work, don't they? And with the pattern for the rotor's drilled holes, no more grooved disc issues. Winner, winner. Chicken dinner!

If I may ask, and for those also considering the rehab, what was the final tab?  ::)

The semi-floating conversion is $240 per rotor .

I also recommend their braided stainless brakelines .

They have a unique feature, you can move the banjo fittings to eliminate any twisting that occurs during installation .

$250 here in Canada + shipping and taxes.  I had Glen at Flying Squirrel motorcycle handle it all for me so it was all taken care of.
