I did a road trip (In my truck...) from Bar Harbor and followed Route 2 from Newport Me. to St. Johnsbury, Vt and then south to Ludlow VT. I drove over on Sunday (Labor Day Weekend) and it was a beautiful day so the bikes were out in force. [smiley=clap.gif] [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif] My observation was that of the few hundred bikes I saw over the course of the four days, 95% were Harley Davidsons. I would guess that some of those were Harley Clones but the Harley Culture seems to be very much alive and well in Northern New England. Maybe I saw 5 BMWs, a bunch of crotch rockets, and a few old hondas. How does this "sample" compare with any of your own observations over the holiday weekend? Dave 2

Pretty much the same ratio here in the Phoenix area .
I see more oilhead BMW state police (in Aridzona they call themselves Department of Public Safety, aka DPS ) bikes than I do 'civilian' BMW's .
I guess if it ain't a Harley, it aint s**t is alive and well here !!!!!

I enjoy the exclusivity of my BMW Airheads and I'll include my Triumph in that mix.
Not that H-D really needs any help but the current popularity of the Bagger/Cruiser class of motorcycles is very evident in manufacturers sales numbers. Even Honda offers their new F6B (Flat Six Bagger) GoldWing.
I'm interested in seeing how the new Indian and it's relatively low price will play out against the H-D.

Ditto that, I believe Polaris has the pockets to keep the brand alive. I like the looks of the naked model [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif] Speaking of naked models, I like this one too. D2

Living as close as I do to Daytona Beach (and BikeWeek) I am used to the V-twin crowd. I would say it is probably a 75% V-twin (Harley, Indian, Honda, Yamaha, etc), 23% crotch rocket and 2% others. I am happy to be in the minority.
I can count on my fingers how many times I have passed another Airhead in the last year. If I use my toes I can include Oilheads in there as well. (This is the South, we need visual aids to count that high). ;D
Without exception, whenever I go somewhere that has a gathering of bikes, I get people that want to look at, talk about it, hear it run about my R65. I don't see that happening with all the others.
Any when I do cross paths with another Airhead it is like visiting with a long lost relative.

Yes, there are alot of v-twin-cruisers on the holiday weekends - I still see more of those than any other bikes around here. But there are a number of BMWs in NH too - they just tend not to ride in slow parades bunched up together as those "be an individual" type of v-twin riders... (sarcasm mode off!)

A different perspective from the UK.
I do see Harleys on the road but not in big numbers and only when the suns out. They are definitely fair weather bikers.
Sports bikes or crotch rockets are popular bikes especially on certain roads that have become known for testing the performance and handling. There is an infamous road very close to where I live that has become so notorious for accidents that they have installed average speed cameras and helicopter surveillance.
A lot of the Crotch Rockets are ridden by fair-weather riders too.
Bikes popular amongst the more serious motorcyclists that ride all year round would be modern BMW's and Triumphs. I think a modern BMW is the most common bike I see on the road. Last time I checked the new registration statistics BMW 1200's were the best selling large capacity model and were out selling Harleys 3 to 1'
Seeing an old airhead out on the road is not at all common and a R45/65 a rare event.

Once you get on the road, most of the bikes are Harleys. I'll give them one thing , they ride the damn things!
I'm in TN this week working and between Knoxville and Nashville( about a 200 mile stretch) Same as CA, If the guy is outta town he is on a cruiser, mostly Harleys. Years ago there were a lot of Airheads traveling, guess the bike or the rider has died off.
I'll probably go first, my R65 has less mileage than I ........ LOL
