Title: Spotted another R65
Post by: Lucky_Lou on September 01, 2013, 10:50:53 AM
Despite the windy conditions I decided to burn some rubber today as it will be my last chance to ride for a few weeks, I called in at Squires for a coffee on the way back and surprisingly  Gertie was the oldest bike on display(79) with the old "V" plate which covers 79/80 and another bike came in on a "V" plate but I am sure if the paintwork is original and the subtle differences make it a 1980 I think, however one thing was really bugging me that was the brakes..... it had ATE (like mine) but the carbs were domed Bings???? previously I have only seen  R65,s in the UK with domed Bings sporting Brembo brakes, I am sure the colour is wrong too as it was two tone with black ? what do you guys think.

At first glance, it would appear someone has spent a buncha money on some upgrades but cheaped out on the fairing's paint work and tacky tape striping. Kinda ruins the effect for me. [smiley=2cents.gif]

It definitely had some money put into it, but I agree that the pinstripe job doesn't seem right.    Still a nice silver smoke idea though.

Were the LS carbs different?  My 82 LS has domed carbs with ATE calipers.  It is not, however, a Euro bike.

wouldn't that fairing be a little heavy for a 65?

The domed Bings came in on all models in Europe in 1980 as far as I am aware, my brother had a 1980 which had them and Brembo brakes + the ugly plastic air filter box.
Chris "Gertie" was sporting a Rickman fairing similar to the one in the picture when I got her it was the first thing I dumped as it weighed a ton. On the plus side I did get £110 for it on eBay which went towards the rebuild.
The later R65 with the lighter flywheel and extra HP would probably cope with the fairing but it would have a big impact on earlier models IMHO.

For everyone person looking to dump their fairing, there is another wanting to fit one!

I personally come down on the side of not having one, but then I use my bike recreationally, even when driving to work.  If it was cold and wet, I would leave it at home.

I too think that all the weight would compromise the performance too much.

If it was a daily driver and I had some distance to cover, I might be tempted to go down that route......

That's what I thought.

When I first bought my LS it had a windshield that I soon removed because it seemed to cause buffeting at my helmet and I also did not like it's looks. If I ever wanted a bike for extended touring in comfort I would go with a touring bike, and not add a fairing to my LS. Dave 2
