Title: Any knowledge on titling a motorcycle in TN?
Post by: disco51 on May 14, 2013, 06:22:29 AM
A little background: when I bought my 79' R65 this year it was without a title.  This is no problem in GA, as vehicles pre-84' don't need a title to be registered.  Going to be moving to TN this summer and wonder what the requirements are there.  Can't seem to find a specific answer after an internet search.  Anyone have any experience with this?
I'd hate to have to sell the bike before I move, but don't want to get stuck in TN either.  The folks at the GA DMW didn't have a good solution for me.

I suggest you go online and get contact information for the Tennessee department of transportation, usually the motor vehicle department is part that governmental agency .

In the search box, put vehicle registration, the site doesn't allow you to link to  a specific page .

The link your looking for is the seventh on the page .

Thanks.  I needed to call.  Looks like I'll be OK since I have it registered in GA.

I don't know how the state of Tennessee handles a situation in which you don't have a title for a vehicle .

The state of Arizona has a process for a bonded title to be issued for a vehicle without a title .

I believe you need to post a $3000 bond and then the MVD does a search for previous owners,  titles and insurance data, when they are satisfied that the vehicle isn't stolen, a permanent  title is issued and you get your bond money refunded .

This process may take a year .

I thought the GA law was weird.  No title, seriously?!  I was skeptical when the prior owner told me I didn't have to have a title when I went to look at the bike.  I walked away, then checked with the DMV and damn straight he was right on.  Don't think I'd go that route again, but hopefully it will work out.

Most, if not all states, have a process for dealing with a lost title.  You just need to find out what it is.

In GA pre 85 does not require a title, but when I moved my 83 from TN to GA this year (it had a TN title), the county required me to get a new title. It was a matter of $18.00 for GA.
Titles and tags are handled at the county clerk's office in your home county in TN. Many county employees in rural areas can be helpful, but others are not always so.
Should not be a problem. Good luck
