Title: New-Season ?'s from newbie. Thank you!
Post by: Matt_1980R65 on May 09, 2013, 08:58:47 AM
Hello and thanks for having this forum. I've had the bike since last spring, and (apparently!) did the right things in terms of draining fuel for winter, etc...

I have read though (but didn't pay enough attention at the time) that you need to add grease to the shaft and I wanted to see if anyone had any more info as I try to get dialed in for the summer?

Thank you in advance!

Welcome Matt .

If you are referring to greasing the transmission input splines, you need to remove the transmission to accomplish this .

Welcome to the forum Matt.  Like Bob, I think you are asking about the input shaft.  Do a search on the forum for "spline lube".  There is no shortage of information available.  This task can be done without removing the tranny, but it is best done if you take the time to remove it completely.  There are other things you need to consider and that would be to replace the drive shaft bolts, and it wouldn't hurt to replace the rubber u-joint boot.  - Mike

Lucky you. One of our R65 forum members lives in your village, Matt. Rob Valdez could be a wealth of information for you. Take snacks.

Rob may be one the road right now as he's doing a cool X-country ride as he winds his way to meet up with Phorqs and I -and many others- at the annual Oklahoma site of the Boxerworks Rally, 16-20 April 2013.

BTW, if you can, set your camera to shoot smaller sized pics prior to posting. Or run 'em thru something like PhotoShop to reduce their size. Easier viewing for everybody and no up/down n' sideways scrolling req'd. [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Oops. Yes, make that May... I need to turn the page on the calendar I got for free from the funeral home.

Hello Guys and thank you for the tips! I will reach out and see what kind of info and ideas I can get on this. Its remarkable to be able to find a local source for that! (particularly as I had emailed the local dealership (Falcone) and asked about getting a pre-season check...and they said that they didn't service bikes as old as this one...

Sorry about the photo as well; I went and tried to resize it before posting, but it still came out that HUGE shot! will try to be smarter about that in the future-

Thanks again and ...if anyone knows of hard side bags that wont cost as much as my bike did in the first place, I'm all ears!

More than the bags, you'll need the proper mounts for your particular R65. The R65 SWB rear sub-frames are different post '79-80. Welding skills, or a friend that does, may come in very handy for you.

Watch eBay as most of us do. Also check out the Internet BMW Riders Market Place http://marketplace.ibmwr.org/

I also cropped it, to show the bike better.  Hope you don't mind!

Your baseline price can be found from the dealer or check out motobins.com.   I like motobins, and I swear I saw the luggage mounts on their site once..  445 GBP means I'm going to wait until my money tree fruits though.

Keep your eyes open on ebay, particularly for the more reputable sellers, such as lamontsanford in TX who often has items for our R65 bikes.   You can also look in (and post a wanted to buy advert) in the IBMWR.ORG/market web page.   And there is our own forum trading section, plus trading sections on ADVRIDER, the BMWMOA forum, and also the re-psycle.com guys in Ohio for parts that are used..
