Title: Changing the ignition on LS

Can anyone steer me towards a post or thread about changing the ignition on my LS.

When I say ignition I mean the key barrel part of the ignition system.

I am sure it is straight forward but would appreciate anyone's experience who has done this.

I haven't been lucky enough to go inside the ignition switch on my R65, so it could be different.  I have recently (like this past weekend) done similar work on my Honda.

Switching lock barrels and whatnot could be fraught with peril.  Locksmiths are a profession for a reason.  Think springs, small fiddly bits, close tolerances, and add a dash of 3d jigsaw puzzle.

Nevertheless I'd go for it.  But use plastic bags to keep the springs close, and on your head in case you loose some!

By the "key barrel part", do you mean the entire ignition switch or the rotating keyed element within the ignition switch?

Replacing the full ignition switch was a simple exercise when I did my '81. A PO had sorta-kinda ghetto-rigged an ignition switch from a riding lawn mower. Gag me!  Plus a key was broken off in the seat lock and the fuel cap lock was full of epoxy. I'm thinking angry ex-girlfriend. ;D

The trick was locating the proper terminal/wire match up. Shop manual solved that. Suggest if you're replacing the entire unit, snap a few digi photos to remind yourself of which wire goes where. I usually do a quick pencil sketch.

If you're asking about the lock itself, a locksmith might be the person to see.

I'm thinking there may have been more problems than just your ignition gremlins?

Job done last night.

Undid the first threaded ring (the one with the two small holes on the front of the ignition.
Slid off the fascia. Undid the indicator lights.
Undid the locking nut on the ignition, took of the two spacers.
Pushed the ignition barrel through the holding frame and out.
Took note of the coloured wires.
Repeated the process in reverse.
