Title: Stupid Phase
Post by: Dave 2 on March 06, 2013, 12:00:19 PM
I seem to be in a phase of my restoration where I'm being pretty stupid. It could be that I'm on the "Home Stretch" of the process and Spring is somewhere in the not too distant future but... The beginning of this goes back to NOT connecting the neutral switch wires while the transmission was out of the frame. Because I broke off one of terminals on the switch trying to plug the wires in :-? This was of course after I had put in new transmission fluid. :o So I go to drain the fluid and without realizing it I drained the fresh engine oil which ended up pooling on the floor because I was not paying attention to the container which was big enough for the transmission fluid but not the engine oil. :-/ So the next day I remove the neutral switch which then sends most of the transmission fluid pooling once again on the floor because I still was thinking that I had drained the tranmission :o The next morning in the shower I had a big DUH moment and realized my errors. So today I put the neutral switch in and proceeded to snap off another terminal (Don't Ask). I hope my stupid phase is OVER. D2

Gotta give you kudos to owning up to your boo boos. Not everyone would be so forthcoming and honest. That will put you right back on the right track again!!! My that engine looks polished!! Did you do that??

I find my stupid phase peaks at both the beginning and end of the project and the situations i find myself in, categorically sound just the same as yours..

I do find it always tends to work out
especially when I embarrass myself into focusing on the task at hand(!)

good luck up in bar harbor!

Hi Sue, that was basically all done by hand. The cylinders and heads I finished up in a small bead blasting cabinet. Thanks for your thoughts. D2

I find that if I do something really stupid (and costly) it helps me to take some time away from the bike and do something unrelated, like beat my head against a wall [smiley=wall.gif] D2

Well, back in the day (married less than a year) I rebuilt my motorcycle in the living room and forgot to put the drain plug in before adding oil.  I heard about that for a while...  [smiley=whistling.gif]

I can imagine what a rukus that could have caused. This little mishap only caused a strong smell of oil in the garage. My partner is very supportive of the restoration "process" even with the occasional oil spill [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif] D2

I'd say take a break from bike rebuilding for a couple days.   But, what you have accomplished so far look very beautiful!   Maybe we'll catch up on a ride along the coast sometime this year.

I can feel the warm summer breeze off the water, sounds like fun. Today I'm continuing to wire up a set of Fiam Highway Blasters (without the Beaver harness) So I'm basically making my own. I have used your posting for help with the process as well as other web resources. I'm hoping to keep Route 1 traffic on their toes with big noise 8-) D2

I'm with you on the stupid phase.
Last night i tried to pull the engine out of the frame (i even left the gearbox attached), it didn't occur to me to drain it of the oil!!

some nights you shouldn't go near powertools!!
