Title: paint job
Post by: jakebass12 on July 31, 2012, 09:44:03 AM
how much would you estimate it would cost to have a decent paint job done on a r65 all the parts( side panels, tank, rear cowling, and front fender)?  as you can see in the picture my bike doesn't exactly match in colors. i just want to go with the original turquoise blue and i was wondering also if anybody knew the paint color number or something near it? and ive never mentioned it before but i have the original tank for the bike that is the turquoise blue but its got some holes in the botom of it that my uncle fixed mostly. and the last picture is of the bike when i first got it. it looks better now then what it did. ;)

sorry if i kinda jumbled on im a little tired. couldn't sleep lats night(i couldn't stop thinking of all the things i want to do with my bike :))

any and all responses are very appreciated, jake

Phil Hawksley's BM Bikes is a nice color reference. http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/ Includes the pin stripe color/s and photos of same.

Look at the top of the rear fender for a paint code sticker. If it's still there, it will tell you the original paint code. My '83 had the sticker with 501 listed and that's what I went with along with the factory silver pin stripes on the tank and tail piece.

Azur Blue #501 is probably the color you are referencing. There are several sites out on the web that sell the OEM-ish German Glasurit paint. Prepare to be shocked by the prices.

Another popular, and far less expensive option, is to select an existing color that is close to what you're wanting. I worked with my local automotive paint and body supply vendor and found a rather perfect 501 match.
The paint is from the Honda automobile line and is listed as Brilliant Sky and/or Cerulean Blue. Dead ringer for the 501 Azur Blue. Much less money. A quart of color, after adding the proper reducer and gloss hardener, is all you'll need for the R65.

Don't know what the rates are at paint shops in your neighborhood, but 'round these parts, it's incredibly expensive with most of the charges related to prep work. The actual paint spray is quick by comparison.
I've trained up 'ol Bengt Phorqs to be a pretty fair apprentice paint shooter. He's presently involved with a pair of side panels for his R90. Black, of course.

My counsel is to get some assistance from a friendly, spray paintin'-experienced buddy and DIY. Bottom line, for your listed parts and based on bike buddies' experiences locally, my guess would be a minimum of $500 for a basic job which wouldn't include spraying the tank's bottom tunnel or the insides of the side panels nor underneath the front fender.

YMMV

well the way i was going to paint it was i have a good friend that has painted many bikes and he said that he would do it for free if i just supplied the paint. and it dosent feel right just him painting and striping it down for free and i was wondering what would be a fair price i could pay him?

here are some of the bikes hes painted.(the bright green one he did with a spray can  ;D)

lool. actually we have a store called NAPA that can take any color of paint you want and put it in an rattle can.

i think the current color of my front fender and rear cowling is Turquoise green metallic. so im trying to decide between Turquoise green metallic, all black, red, or 501. the reason i like the black is because theres a bikini fairing on ebay thats black and i think would look nice on my bike but i dont know if i could repaint the fairing or if the black fairing would go along with a Turquoise green metallic bike. but what ide really like is to get a LS fairing. if they didn't cost an arm and a leg and all my lunch money for the rest of my life i would get one. :D
