Title: Sedalia Mo - it's only 4 months away!
Post by: nhmaf on March 06, 2012, 10:32:02 PM
So, I figured I'd put this out there to see who is thinking of going to the BMWMOA rally in MO this summer?

I'm pretty sure that Neal "R65Guy" will be there as it is only a couple hours from his place.  I'm not 100% certain that I am going, but am strongly considering it - though it may be far enough that I leave the R65 at home and take my Kawasaki sport tourer.  I enjoyed taking (2) days to ride out / ride back to Tennessee on the R65LS on mostly all back roads (2200 mile round trip) but my legs wouldn't straighten out for two days afterwards, even using the pillion pegs as "rearsets" for cruising on the open spaces.

Who is thinking/dreaming/planning on going?

As they say on The Price is Right - "Come on Down!"  I hope to see Mike and Sue and many other R65 friends there.   Looking forward to a good time.

Almost unbelievable, had a note from Monte this morning that he is considering the rally.  (No doubt he is researching the various funeral homes between Denton and Sedalia to see about the free coffee stops available.)   8-)  If we can get a commitment out of Mr. Every Day Is a Saturday Now That I Am Retired I might just join him on the sojourn on my R90.  Any other commitments?  Anyone heard from Ada lately?

I have heard from Graham and Aïda from NC. They haven't formed the summer's plans yet but they are doing more small dirt bike riding these days they say, than the road bikes. They are going up to W. Va to ride trails...Hatfield and McCoy land early April.
I'll put a bee in the bonnet to visit the forum!

I am also think about going. I used to live 20 mile west of there from 1963 to 1969.  I have pass through a couple of times. Would like to spend a few days going around the stomping grounds.

Sue's right.  We haven't made our summer plans, but Sedalia probably won't be.  We were planning on the Hatfield McCoy Trails next week, but we're a bit under the weather (probably all that pollen about), so we're putting that off for a bit.

Planning on attending from northern Michigan.  Working up the courage to mount the R65LS......Trying to get some local seat time to toughen up the backside.  The LS is getting close to being ready.  Anyone from this area making the trip?  Maybe we can hook up.

Be safe

I'm planning on attending!  If my wife comes, we're taking the trailer and R65 in back of truck (she's not big on tent camping anymore).

If my wifes stays home, I'll ride my K75s - more comfortable and better equipped for longer road trips.

I hate to say this, but I'll be watching the weather and making a last minute decision..

A couple months ago I bought a couple Superstakes tickets without even knowing that they were also admission to the rally.. I just felt it was a good cause and pretty good odds on winning something (and hopefully it won't be a lifetime MOA membership, since I've been a Life Member for 20+ years)

And while at the Madison, WI GRRR rally a couple weeks ago, I WON another Superstakes ticket as a door prize..

So, I've got 3 admissions to the rally, but I'm only going to go if it's not going to be miserable.. It's a 7ish hour ride to the rally, and I'll gladly go, but not if it's going to be hot and humid..

If the weather's going to be miserable, I'll ride 5 hours north and dip my feet in Lake Superior instead..  ;)

Title: MOA Rally in Sedalia: time to exchange phone numbers
Post by: suecanada on July 05, 2012, 09:33:12 PM
It's that time to start exchanging cell phone numbers to those who are intending to be at the MOA National in Sedalia, MO. I have Nhmaf's but no one elses. I will be camping. Do ya think Mike that we can find another air conditioned van like we found too late last summer???

I don't know, Sue!

I'm currently having some problems with my back/sciatica which is both very annoying and difficult to deal with.  I am hoping it is gone -or at least managed- by time to head to the rally.

I DID pre-register - actually bought one of those $100 sweepstakes tickets that also gets you admission to the rally.   I am hoping  to win a more comfortable motorcycle seat - maybe with a new motorcycle attached-LOL!!!
Title: Re: Sedalia Mo - it's only 4 months away!
Post by: suecanada on July 06, 2012, 12:07:51 PM
Sciatica pain is awful...nauseating! I can't think of a worse situation for it either than sitting on a motorcycle seat for miles on end, no where to stretch out your legs and it's hot as all get out!! :o

Don't overdo it or try to be a 'sport' and make the back worse. Remember....it would seem that whatever we have hurt while we are young comes "back" to haunt us as we age! All old injuries like the usual kid ones when we played hard and healed up quickly, start to plague us at least me!

Remember my friend David with his broken back and now an added accident in a car recently to irritate his old injury further....he's on enough meds that I wonder how he thinks straight. He rides and that is his salvation but.....how long can that last? :-/

Bought my SuperSweepstakes/get in the rally free ticket yesterday myself.  Decided what the heck, it's time to make another rally and I ain't getting any younger.  Never mind the bad knee.  I plan on showing up on Thursday afternoon sometime.  I'll be camping.

Sue, I'll send you a PM with my cell phone.  Are you working oil change this year?  -Mike

What bike are you riding to rally?
Title: Re: Sedalia Mo - it's only 4 months away!

The jury is still out on that.  The R90 needs a new neutral indicator switch since the old one is leaking.  On order from Motobins.  The R1100S has rearsets and I'm not sure if my knee can go the distance without making me crankier than I already am.  The Guzzi California is a pretty comfortable ride and it's almost a beemer except with perkier jugs.  Right now I'm leaning to the Guzzi.

I have LRB all packed more or less...yeah...I know, it's an old thing to get ready this soon. Anyway, I like LRB as he has better gas range and no chain but he is old, with new stuff mind you, his caliper bleed screw passed the braknig tests Stew and I put it through but....hmmmm.....have put LED running lights on today..and 1 doesn't work, humph! Can ya change the bulb in an LED???? It doesn't look like it comes outta there :-?
LRB has a new tire on the rear. Front tire has 6000 miles on it but still lots of room to the TWI left. May still get it changed...what do you guys think?? 1000 miles to Sedalia, 1000 miles maybe to NC, 1000 miles home..so the front tire would have 9000 miles on it by the time I got home...it is a Metzler Lasertec. Have done that many miles before but I'm a worry wart now.

First question...is 9000 miles too much on a Lasertec front tire?

Second question...is it the front tube or the rear tube one takes as a spare?
Title: Re: Sedalia Mo - it's only 4 months away!
Post by: Bob_Roller on July 08, 2012, 08:32:53 PM
I get between 10-12,000 miles on Lazertec front  tires .

That's with 36-40 psi in the tires .
Title: Re: Sedalia Mo - it's only 4 months away!
Post by: nhmaf on July 08, 2012, 09:00:53 PM
I carry a front tube - it will still expand/fit the rear tire size and will fit the front tire (of course) without bunching up.   If you bring a rear tube and get a flat on the front, it is harder to get it in there without bunches/pinches, etc as it is oversize.   Of course, about 80% of the flats one gets on the road are the rear tire...but.
Title: Meeting at Sedalia Rally
Post by: Red_Hen on July 09, 2012, 06:57:43 PM
Hi Gang,

I'm planning to be at the Sedalia Rally Friday & Saturday & departing back to Minnesota Sunday morning.

Would be nice if we can hang out for a little while and talk shop!  My cell is 612 7438681.  Probably texting is best.  There is a map of the rally posted on the BMW ON website.  Perhaps we can meet inside where it's air conditioned or we can attend an airhead wrenching educational seminar - there are several scheduled.

Looking forward to it!

I should be there if work doesn't get in the way like it did last year.  Sue and Mike have my number.  Haven't seen everyone since Johnson City, looking forward to it.  The building at the beer garden is air conditioned if I am not mistaken.  ;)

Well, I'll be there from Wednesday on, mostly at the Airhead Tent, I think.  I live only 1.5 hours away.  Last name is Sweet (yes.)  I hope to meet some of you there.  I wouldn't be riding my '86 R65 right now without your help.

Friday in the eveining at the beer tent might be a grand plan for meeting. I'll have the red R65 cap with the headlights on it....cap clip lights! Beer tent is always a good plan ;)

Got the phone numbers, thanks.

Decided to have the tire changed anyway. Number one reason or rationalization i.e.: front will now match the rear being a BT45 Bridgestone AND, two, it will most likely be lots of hot weather ahead and I don't need another anything to be on my mind causing doubt.

It seems to be harder each year to get the gumption up to actually head out on one of these long rides.

Is there anyone out there who would think it wiser to take the Bonneville as it is newer, FI or any other reason?? It is a BMW Rally so that's one reason to take LRB along with gas range and no chain.
Ya see...there I go again with the doubting! :-/ :-/

I'm riding my K75s - much more comfortable than my R65LS.
As much as I love my airhead, I know the K will get me there quickly, comfortably, and dependably.

One question here for you Texans and eastern/southerners: what combo of outer wear do you recommend for humid weather? Got both a Tourmaster Flex jacket that is mesh underneath and a semi-waterproof outer jacket one can use or not AND my many-zippered vents Olympia AST 3/4 jacket which just comes waterproof but quite airy.
In the dry heat I have no problem: just a good vented textile with cool ice vest type thing underneath and vents partially open or not.
Humid weather is tough. I got through the Bloomsburg heat with the Olympia and vents open but just. Pant choice is either total mesh or Klim well vented waterproof, or a pair of zip-off BMW pants in beige.

I am tending to wear what worked in Bloomsburg as long as I don't stop!!!

I wear a poly wicking shirt and a vented summer weight armored jacket.  For pants, either Draggin' Jeans or a pair of Olympia armored pants with Red/White/Blue suspenders.  Start drinking about two liters of water per day starting NOW.  I will wear a Camelbak when I ride, but will stop every 100 miles or so to refresh and rehydrate.  I do have one of the Kool Vests in tent size to accomodate my girth but haven't ever worn it during a ride.   To complete the ensemble, a colorful bandana, I prefer the Riders In The Sky model from Too Slim's Mercantile, that I will keep damp and worn about my neck.  Water, water, and more water until your belly sloshes.

I wear a mess armoured jacket and keep dousing my t-shirt with cool water.  I gotta try the camelback, though.

I'm not at all an expert, but we get some humidity in Mid-Missouri and mine works surprisingly well.

I wear a mesh jacket with a wicking type tee shirt underneath.  No water dousing for me, I like it dry when it is humid.  First Gear waterproof overpants with a thin pair of jogging shorts underneath. Camelback in the tankbag.  I have a waterproof liner for the mesh jacket as well as a quilted liner if the weather turns cold.

And as we all saddle our bikes and head to Missouri to congregate, let us be mindful of these words of wisdom from a 1962 Honda Motor Cycle Instruction Book.

"Translated by Honda for the American Motorcycle Rider: The following rules for motorists are so successful in Japan, that American motorcycle riders might profitably paste them in their hats.

1.  At the rise of the hand by Policeman, stop rapidly. Do not pass him by or otherwise disrespect him.

2.  When a passenger of the foot, hooves in sight, tootel the horn trumpet melodiously at first. If he still obstacles your passage, tootel him with vigor and express by word of mouth, warning Hi, Hi.

3.  Beware of the wandering horse that he shall not take fright as you pass him. Do not explode the exhaust box at him. Go soothingly by.

4.  Give big space to the festive dog that makes sport in roadway. Avoid entanglement of dog with wheel spokes.

5.  Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon. Press the brake foot as you roll around the corners, and save the collapse and tie up."

(saw this on the Guzzi forum and couldn't resist these pearls of wisdom)

As much as it does pain me to say it, I'm afraid that I wont be making it to Sedalia after all.   This sciatica problem I've been battling the past month seems to be unwilling to go, and actually has gotten worse the past few days just as I though it may be getting a bit better.    I was able to ride ~ 160 miles one day last week, which is normally 'child's play' for me, but it has been coming back to haunt me now, and I'd have to be doing alot more mileage than that each day for this trip.    I regret that I won't be able to see all those familiar faces - and new ones too, at the rally this year.  My cousin who was planning to ride with me is also again have problems with this flying brick, so if I went it would be another solo trip.   That ordinarily wouldnt bother me much were it not for this medical issue as well - so it is probably better to not push my luck and end up flat on my back someplace with no means to get medication, etc.

I 'm hoping to get in to the physician's office this week and perhaps catch some rally or two in the northeast somewhere later in the summer/early fall.

I really will miss the conversations in the beer tent!

Hope that you all enjoy the rally, and be careful about the heat and the traffic!

-Mike

Hi Mike,

We'll miss you for sure but knowing that you're also "here" so often, is comforting.

What's important is for you to get a handle on your sciatica.  Good luck and sounds to me like a wise decision.

Best,
Ken

The Johnson city rally was fun, even though we had somewhat of a staggered/overlapping Team R65 attendance with some of the other members like Bengt Phorqs - I hope you guys can all get together for this one!
