Title: K75 gremlin update
Post by: Lucky_Lou on July 03, 2012, 12:01:42 PM
Progress is slow but as i suspected i have 2 separate problems, i stripped the starter motor where one of the brushes is shot, while tinkering with the battery connected the headlights briefly came on when i was repositioning the connectors on the main wiring loom.
Looks like there is something amiss in there either earth or power, i cannot make sense of the Haynes wiring diagram as i have 2 relays connected together with a green common wire (Ground maybe??) i cannot find any on the diagram with just a green wire ?? this is where i am getting 12v+ i suspect i should be 12v- or the relay cannot work as the other terminal is connected to the starter motor 12v+ input.
One brush is 1/4" shorter than the other

I doubt i would get a good enough image, i have to use a magnifying glass to follow it.
I have the Clymer one on disc which i will check out later.

Maybe this wiring diagram is helpful.http://electricwiringdiagram.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/BMW-K75-motorcycle-ABS-system-wiring-diagram.jpg

It explains what wires activate coils and which ones are contacts on the relays.

Apparently grounds are not green as one might expect. As fuse block has greens coming out of fuses.

Thats the first diagram i have seen that makes any sense.. (these are solid green cables with no other colour.)
Follow the Black 1.0 cable back to the load shed relay, it appears to be connected to the coil of the relay (as you would expect ) it then on the other side of the coil is the green wire (2 of them actually where i am getting the 12v+) which according to the diagram goes to a joint point with one wire to the ignition switch, one to the Abs control(2nd off the relay), and one to the kill switch, presumably the one to the kill switch then goes to earth providing an earth for the other units ???? i am wondering if this joint point is the problem as the Abs is not working either but i believe the green cable is effectively an earth, or it may be the kill switch thats the problem as i have already replaced the LS relay to no effect,The other possibility could be the earth from the kill switch/ ignition as i am also having issues with the lights and indicators.
i will post some more pictures in the next couple of days when i have rebuilt the starter motor.
Thanks for the input greatly appreciated, Lou

For some reason the diagram is now coming up in an unreadable format ?? Nice to chat Chris...good luck with the plans, check out my "Fins" post.

I have to check the diagram. But as I remember all black cables are ground. Will do a little more wire deciphering this afternoon.

Thinking about it the kill switch cannot be the problem as the starter motor relay works ......going to lose sleep now.

Turns out the Green cable is supposed to be live and the relay earths through the starter motor.....

This is another diagram that may help its off a K100 but looks similar to K75.
Looks like the load shed relay turns off the Headlight, the Horn, and the flasher unit when the starter is activated.

Oh joy.... sorted, all Loads lead to Rome (starter motor) the Load shed Relay earths/grounds back through the starter motor.
Having stripped cleaned and replaced the brushes carefully cleaning the commutator and cleaning the segment gaps. We have lift off no sign of gremlins slight mod though, when i megga tested the earth through the starter body there was significant resistance through the body to the anchor points so i have put an additional earth wire to the casing bolts......on the road again tra la la.
