Title: Load Shed Relay
Post by: Lucky_Lou on June 26, 2012, 12:11:12 PM
Still struggling with the electrics on the K75, i think i have 2 separate problems 1 earth trouble with the lights / indicators. 2 the real headache i am getting 12v on both sides of the start relay which only clears if you pull the LS relay out, does anyone know if the LS relay is normally closed ?

What does the load shed relay do, removes power from non essential circuits during starting ?

Yes, there is a cable running from the starter motor which activates it but i cannot work out why i am getting a live feed from it when the ignition is on.I may disconnect it to see what happens there cannot be that much load going out elsewhere.

Sounds like similar function to the wiring of the headlight relay in the US-model airheads from the 80s (with the always on headlight).   The only other significant load I would think of would be the fuel pump - but you wouldn't want to shut that off while cranking a K-bike.

Hi Lou,

This may be helpful for #2 - if battery voltage is low on a K75 the starter relay can get stuck - here is a technical article from IBMWR.org

http://skylands.ibmwr.org/tom/tech/starter-relay.html

Let me know if this helps.  If not, the BMW MOA website has a tech forum for K75 bikes which helped me tremendously to learn how to work on my K75s.

Thanks for the link Kev, the starter relay is working fine when the LS relay is disconnected..... and its a new battery, whats happening is i am getting 12v on the output side of the start relay (not enough to turn the motor which i have stripped off to check) without pressing the start button when the load shed relay is plugged in, with the relay unplugged i only get voltage on the button.
I have ordered a new LS relay which i hope to fit next weekend and we will see what happens could be this is causing the gremlins in the other electric circuits.

Lou,
If you don't figure this out, send me a PM - I can email Paul Glaves and ask him for you.  He is a K75 expert.

More info in my other thread, "Gremlin Update"........Perhaps Paul Glaves has an answer for the green wire mystery
