I was looking in an old storage shed yesterday, and found some toys I forgot I had, Speargun, snowmobile and an 81 R65, must have had 10 wasp nest, gas cap was missing and that seemed like there favorite spot, looks like a mouse nest in the helmet, but it looks like aircleaner material. went to the state and got a title, this morning. looks like it needs rear shocks, tires, fork seals, battery, gas cap. front brake locked, fluid changes? is that a 1000 bucks or so to get ridable.

Shocks, tires, battery and fork seals are easy and will cost 300 - 500$ depending on quality. Gas gap and brakes you will probably be better of look looking for 2nd hand items as they are very expensive new. As well as the normal service items you will almost certainly need carb re-build kits and by the time you've found out what else needs doing the 1000$ soon get used up.

It'll be a bit more than that I imagine...
I just had my fork seals done by a local guru, and it was 280$ish. The bold might do it themselves, but I think there's a tool that makes it much easier.
Front tire, if you take just the rim in (as I recently did) you're looking at 150ish, probably 300$ total for front and rear.
The cheapest decent new shocks.. Hagons for 180$ plus shipping?
Those are just the big ticket items, now start thinking about a new air filter, oil filter, couple quarts oil, gear oil change.
The big unknown is the front brake. If it's just crud and can be cleaned out, it'll be cheap. If it's a rebuild of the master cylinder (which was hit or miss for me), still 30$ for the kit. If you end up getting a new one, which I did.. 150$ from motobins, I think. I've not had any trouble with rebuilding / cleaning the calipers, but if your rotor(s) is/are warped... Cha ching! I recommend getting rebuilt rotors from Spiegler. I love mine, only cost 230$. (per rotor) And then 20 or 40$ for new pads.
Nevertheless, it's an approachable project, given a big enough wallet. Assuming it ran when it was parked.
(All numbers from memory. IANAL. Do not use in conjunction with alcohol.)

If you are paying someone else to do the work 1000$ won't go very far. A project of this sort is rarely viable unless almost all the work is done in house. If that's not a realistic proposition rather than putting large sums into a bike that will never be worth what you spend, it might be far better to buy something already in roadworthy condition.

+1 with Monte - WHO *forgets* they have a motorcycle? Especially if it is a BMW, or Harley - two of the more expensive bikes (new or used) in their timeframe?

The guy who owned mine must have, he put it in a friends shed and it sat there 20 years, he never came back.

That doesn't mean he forgot about it. He abandoned the bike for whatever his reason. [smiley=embarassed.gif]
In a way, kind of like the British PM and his wife, who just this week, left their daughter in a pub and drove home. They didn't actually abandon the poor little girl, they just forgot her! ;)

Remember there are a number of things that you can not see, that may need replacing. Seals, Bearings, Gaskets, Etc. The cost of just getting it on the road does not necessarily reflect what the bike actually needs to be in good repair. I agree with Barry, if you are not willing to do all this yourself $1000.00 may not get you far. Would someone remind me if I have another bike tucked away? [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]D2
