Hello all! Amazed to find an entire website devoted to the R65! I have an '81 R65 that I killed and dissected in 2003, and very slowly I'm getting it back together. I'll get some pictures up soon of a few issues I'm having.
-
Welcome aboard! We like pics - I think you need to make a couple more posts before the pic-fairie will let you post them here, and/or you can link from an outside photobucket account, or similar..

Welcome!
What year is it? Why was it prodded, poked and dissected?
-
Welcome to the asylum, old noob. Glad to have you with us.
You join a whole bunch of "veteran" riders. Not necessarily old but certainly well seasoned... including myownself.
Some of us, like really old wirespokes, have a wee bit o' vision and memory loss so you may have to repeat yourself from time to time. Most of us noticed in your initial post that your R65 is a 1981 model. ::)
We also don't take ourselves too damn seriously. Post up pics pronto. We've colored on all the recent ones.

I have ridden HD and Triumph for almost 35 years, but have always loved the BMWs and resolved to get one ASAP. I got my chance in 2003 when someone traded the R65 in on a new HD at the dealership where I worked. I scooped it up for a few hundred bucks and immeadiately discovered it was running on one cylinder. I now suspect it was a carb synchro problem, but I just saw an opportunity to tear it down and start over for the simple joy of having a mechanical project. I made a lot of mistakes but had an awful lot of fun with it. Things went downhill healthwise and financially and the poor thing languished in the storage shed until now.

Hey, Monte! Where'd my crayons go????!!!!!
CALLINECTES - Ok, now I'm on the same page with you. See, you should have spent more time on the bike and you wouldn't have had the health issues! ;)
Whatcha got left to do before she's roadworthy?

The tires might last for the duration of a test ride, exhaust nuts, have to FIND the side covers and the mufflers, and the biggest thing of all:
At least two of the plastic electrical connectors under the front engine cover have basically deteriorated. They just crumbled when I touched them!(I got pictures). So I have to go over all the electrics so there's no surprises.
-
Post pics of the crumbled plastic connectors. I may have some in my stash bins.
Also have two pair pristine R65LS mufflers gathering dust... dust, I say. Not rust.
The R65 exhaust header nuts are smaller than all others, Be certain you buy the correct new/used nuts.

I don't know if this will work, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I guess I'm still not allowed to post photos. Anyway, I found my mufflers! The rotten connectors are the one coming off the "bean can" which snaps into a lead coming off the diode board. More later!

Welcome!! These fellows here will fix you right up first with the bike issues and then tweak your funny bone and all your health issues will diminish at the very least!! You'll feel better!
Monte...are those R65LS mufflers pristine black for interest sake??? Hmmmm!
-
There is a special section for chronicling rebuilds and restorations. Start a thread there and go crazy!

Quite so, Sue. The OEM LS black chrome mufflers even have the debossed BMW left & right side part numbers plus the decibel ratings mandated by, probably, Californy. Interested in a little bling for LRB?
-
I don't recall seeing any decibel ratings on mine - where should I look?

Spokes, I've got two pair of R65LS mufflers; one has the debossed data near the end of the mufflers body while the other pair has nada. Go figure. Maybe required to meet some socialist laws in the Peoples Democratic Republic of...
Maybe I'll post a snap if I can get the lighting to pick up the details.
-
I guess it may be a given that my original system will someday be toast....so I may be interested depending.....could you send a PM Monte but I can't move quick as going away for a month come next Thursday. Not on the bike either :(
Probably a lot more priorites for purchase for me to consider really but worth a think or two I'd say.
-
Here's the decibel data and BMW part number on one of the LS mufflers.
The imprint is actually closer to the header than the end of the muffler. I had not remembered this correctly... as my bride may willingly testify.

I was afraid you were talking about that nonsense. I've heard of guys grinding off that writing or brazing it up, or?, and getting them re-chromed. Sometime in the 90s I think replacement mufflers were coming with that junk. Wonder if they still are?
I don't think it was a California thing, but some sort of big brother federal requirement. You know, law makers gotta make laws - that's what they're paid for. I like the Will Rogers quip "thank goodness we don't get all the governments we pay for".
You've got two sets, Monte? How much do you want for them?

I dunno, 'spokes.
Suecanada is sorta kinda halfway interested in the pair I photo posted with the 'noise' data. Will let her have right of first refusal for her LRB. I'll keep you in the loop.
Pair numero dos is a rust n' dent free, non-debossed and repainted with semi-gloss hi-temp black.
Both pairs were on my R65s which now rock Dunstall-style peashooters; one pair stainless 8-) and the other chrome.
PM me if you'd like to make an offer. I ain't thinking their, like, gold or anything. Have to figure safe packing and shipping cost. At your convenience, if you'd like.
Gee, I sold an R65 speedo couple days ago. Am I in bid-niz? :D

Nah, just supporting your habbit. 8-)
I like the look and sound of the LS mufflers I've got, but they're looking kind of tired. It'd be nice to have them restored. I'm afraid to make an offer - you might take me up on it and then I'd have to scrape up the cash. :)
