To get a bargin bike and turn it into a cafe racer...
If I do I'm dead meat. The wife absolutely kill me dead...
I'm selling the second table saw & some other stuff....
Hmmmm.
Have you guys done this?

Never been married, I answer to no one !!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

We don't know your wife - so only you can know for sure whether or not you could survive it or not. But, I will say that sometimes, SOMETIMES, it is better to ask for forgiveness than for permission.. ;-)
If we don't hear from you for an extended period, be sure that the forum has your location so we know which police department to call..

I was 0 for 168 when I figured out I wasn't going to win one........I just go ahead and do it now. Just ask yourself, how many times can a 115 lb woman hit you with a bat before she gets plumb tuckered out? The beatings eventually stop and you'll have your cafe toy.

Just wear your helmet to bed until you find a different topic to pi$$ her off about to divert attention from the new scooter...

I kinda have that itch also, thoughts of trading in my Bonneville for either a F650 GS or a G650 GS, this all started when I stupidly went to the local Motorrad dealer 2012 launch and test rode the F800 GS two weeks ago.
I liked the F800 except found it a bit on the high side (29" inseam), so then test rode a F 650 GS which was equally nice but without the height.
I then saw the G650 GS, looks like a sweet little bike, have to test ride that one yet.
I could get myself in big trouble with the missus too. :-/

I have the same itch - i'm fighting it - I sold my Corvette so I actually have room to walk around in the garage now - I have room for 1 more but another bike would just screw things up - I going to continue the fight - I want to keep my r65 stock - I keep telling myself - I want to keep my r65 stock - tom

Almost twenty years ago I went to talk to a guy with an R90S for sale. Just an ad in the paper that had been there several weeks. Met him, got on great (we're still friends - in fact I'm rebuilding a couple transmissions for him currently), I had stuff he was willing to swap for and he figured the money side would work out (even though I didn't have any at the time).
Came home the next day with my dream bike where the day before there was no way! How cool is that????
Anyway, the wife blew up because I hadn't consulted her first!!!!!????
Not long after we got divorced and I like to think of that bike as the catalyst. It was probably the last straw - but in a good way. :) We shoulda gotten divorced fifteen years earlier!
Moral of the story? Follow your passion! If someone close doesn't like it - tell em to bugger off! What is it with women who try to act like your personal banker and loan officer anyway????

That’s my 1st wife - When she passed I couldn't afford a funeral so I was going to burry her out back & since I couldn't afford a tomb stone I figured I would burry her with her head stricken out of the ground but change my mind at the last minute - I kind of liked her - so I just hung her on the wall. - Tom

Do it.
But don't do it to a nicely presented standard machine. Go buy a scruffy runner and have some fun.
Tell the missus, you'll eventually sell the nice one, when the Cafe Racer is finished. That should keep her quiet for a while. Don't spend your money on bling up front - get the basic bike right first - its almost there anyway. It will be a throwing away exercise. Sell what you do not need on ebay. Do as much of it yourself as you can, its more rewarding.
Just remember though, the more you move away from standard machine, the more focused the bike will become - I.e. it will do some things better than a standard machine, but some things it wont.

I do love that bike... Steve there was someone asking about re routing the oil breather (in the tech section i think), how did you address that problem on your cafe racer ?.
Lou
Ahh i see you have answered it..
-
DO IT!!
The wife has the house, you need something to 'occupy' you!!
That was my argument
I just bought a BSA c11g as a cafe project!
(i have to repaint the living room & we're going away this weekend) BUT i got the bike!!!

I kinda have that itch also, thoughts of trading in my Bonneville for either a F650 GS or a G650 GS
I think I am coming to my senses, Why would I trade in my bonnie against a new F650 GS, when I could pick up a 2008 F650 GS (with only 7k up), for the same money and keep my Bonnie?
The only reason I can think is the wife will be even madder, but hey what the hell, the garage is big enuff, I would just need to dump some junk, This is very tempting....................

The missus won, the Bonnie is going, :-/, and a 2012 F650GS SE (bumble bee) is arriving shortly. :)

Maybe not as pretty as Bonnie was, but boy is she a good ride!

I'm beginning to wonder if I can salvage my wrecked parts bike! I still have the slightly damaged frame and motor... :D

Gee RSMike, you have gone in the exact opposite direction as me..I replaced an '08 F650GS twin with a Bonneville SE '09. Both are great bikes. You will absolutely adore the gas range of the GS after the puny Bonneville's range but you may miss the nice comments at gas stations now. Both would have been darn near perfect. I toured on both and I suppose if I had to choose, I'd pick the GS for a long tour simply based on the gas range..no other reason. Maybe the GS gets better gas mileage but both are quite good at 60-70 miles per imp. gallon. Say 50-60 U.S. mpg. There will come a day when I finally realize that stopping for gas more often is a GOOD thing as I age!

Yes, your bang on the money, the bonnie is a beautiful bike, I miss her (as I do all my previous bikes), :'(, wish I could have kept them all. But yes loving the (I admit ugly) GS, just got back from a 400 Km run on her yesterday, and after fitting a touring screen and top box, it was very comfortable. I only stopped for gas once, I think I'm getting about 50mpg at the moment, but expect that to improve as she runs in. Our roads can be very bumpy, rough and broken at times, and that is where the GS ( and the R65) do better than the Bonnie.

Thanks guys and gals. I have really enjoyed reading this thread... ::)

***It's too funny hearing you guys blast the missus*** :P
It's my hubby I have to content with... ::)

Don't they always win... >:( :(
But, there is always another way... 8-)
We all just need to look harder to find it!
I'm trying to get my missus to agree to come with me on the back of min when it is done, knowing that the 65 will probably not be that comfortable 2 up for an extended period of time, she kinda likes the idea of touring in Europe where the roads are not so busy ( :-?). So, then I can introduce the idea of another bike, a bigger one with a comfy seat and nice luggage to carry important things a lady needs when travelling on a motorcycle... ;)
What are my chances?
