I was getting off one of my bikes today - My R100 with the Vesco fairing was parked next to me - I lost my footing & down I went - On the way down my arm banged up against the Wind Screen on the r100 - The screen exploded into 50 pieces - like dropping a piece of glass! Never seen this before - I got a new screen on order tonight - I was surprised they were available but a company called Gustafsson Plastics out of the UK make over 3,000 different screens - They have an office in FL - tom

Bad luck but happens unfortunately! First off, how's your arm, Tom? Sounds like the screen was either made to burst into many pieces for safety reasons or maybe it is brittle from UV damege? Better than big sharp shards anyway.
-
My arm is fine - it happen so fast my fist might have hit it? -
It was brittle all right & there were large pieces as well - If you notice on newer shields there is a DOT sticker on the shields - so I guess there are different standards now that have to be met & after seeing this I think it's a good thing -

Sad for the unfortunate incident, glad that you're not hurting. As we all are aware of, leaves, paper, oil - just about anything that unknowingly sneaks between the pavement and the sole are a biker's nemesis. I went down when I stepped on a ballpoint pen - bike fine, back ruined. OHHH what we go thru for the joy of riding.
Good luck, Tom. Try not not looking at the bike when you walk into the garage - until after it's graced with the screen. I know the feeling :)

Glad your ok Tom, got me thinking now as there is a small crack in the screen on the "K".
I used to install plastic screens on car wash bays the plastic ones were 1/2 the price of glass even though we machined them to fit (4x8 ft) they were incredibly strong and never shattered as you have described.

I still have the pieces in a bucket - I'll take a pic & post it -
This screen was very thin compared to today's screens plus the age factor, I can understand how it would be brittle - I was in shock when it happened also very pissed at myself, at the time i didn't know if i could get a new screen made, that really bothered me.
it made a big racket - the kids & my wife came running out to the garage to see if i was still alive.
Hell to get old - stuff happens more often - I try to be more careful in the shop - tom

Here's the larger pieces i picked out of the trash can - 15/16 pieces plus all the small stuff - I didn't break any of these pieces for the pix - this is the way the shield exploded!

I've heard some very good reports about the quality of the Gustaffson screens. Glad that you didn't catch a rock while riding. That could have been more than aggravating.

I dont think that the windshield was the original one with that fairing. I have the same fairing and original windshield on my 82 R65 since I bought it new. My windshield looks alot thicker that your pieces. I have 2 cracks in mine at the LH side where my mirrors mount. This happen when I rearend a van and came over the top. Some point I would like to replace mine would like to know what you think of the replacement windshield when you get it.

I'll let you know when I get the new shield - I was surprised how thin the screen was - I also had 2 cracks in my shield at the mounting holes on each end - I drilled a small hole at the top of each of these cracks to stop the cracking - If i get lucky i'll get the new screen late next week - I was going to 2 day ship it but that was 85 bucks ! so I passed - takes 5 working days for me to get stuff out of Fl.

OH, The dangers of a lexan screen on a bike... One of those shards could easily kill you .....
Cut your head right off...Scary...
I hope the new one is Polycarbonate...

so that's the deal "Lexan" - I didn't ask about the new screen but it's just not that easy to go out & buy a screen for a Vesco fairing! i'll just have to take my chances i guess - I would think all new screens would have to be DOT approved? I know my new HD screen & my Cee Bailey shield on the RT both say DOT approved

I got a Gustaffson screen for my 80, fit perfect. Good luck
-
mine was also a perfect fit - tom

I've been buying screens from Leif G. for years. Good to do business with and reasonably priced...
