Howdy all, new member here in the PNW. Glad to be a part of this community. Current project: turning a 1979 R65 into a cafe beast. Taking a lot of inspiration from Steve Hawkins' cafe (wow).

Welcoem aboard!
Steve's project is a good one.
We used to have a member here who did some pretty creative frame building - I wish I had some of his pics around. Anyhow, the R65 is a nice handling airhead from which to work.

Welcome Dan - I get up your way once or twice a year - I have a daughter in Bothell - Few months back I sold a beautiful 1930 Model A I restored to a cop in Tacoma - When the weather drys up I will be coming up to the see new LaMay Museum - It will be a bike trip - from Seattle I'll head to Spokane over the Cascade Hwy - Think this year I'll head down on 395 to Reno & then back home - again welcome - My naked r65 is one of my favorite rides - they make a great looking Cafe - tom

Dan,
Thanks for the positive comments on my old bike.
Just remember, these Cafe Racers evolve.
The project can give you many years of enjoyment.
Try just getting the basics there first and don't spend too much money on bling and fancy paint jobs. Ride it a while and plan your next modification.
Try not to make the mistake of having a 'hanger queen' that empties your pockets and then does not quite hit the mark.
Initially its just a chucking away excercise really, as the basic bike is pretty much there and sound!
I did mine initially in the winter of 2001/2002. I am now considering to change the look slightly and refresh it and finally rid myself of a couple of niggles with the finish. But I will get this summer out of it first.
Going to make some slight changes to the rear, repaint frame and tank(might brush paint it myself) and fix the drive shaft spring - which is a little slack. And I also might go for the full Trailtech instrument cluster, modify the seat and get it covered in suede.
Got to start a list. ;)
If you have any questions for me, put them up and I will try and answer them for you and anyone else who is interested.
