Title: I dragged another one home today!
Post by: tom_hudson on February 23, 2012, 10:59:17 PM
I broke my rule of no more than 3 bikes - but snit happens when you fall in love -

But what is it?

I will tell you it's awesome - over 9 grand has been put into the bike over the last 9K miles - everything is new - engine, trans, rear drive,  shocks, seals - everything - The guy got it ready for that once on a life time ride to Alaska - Well the bike got done but the trip never happed :-[

Wonder what it is ;D(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpic20.picturetrail.com%3A80%2FVOL93%2F471113%2F24037084%2F401222070.jpg&hash=e72322e17608c60d58c66325f843ac2217c73f27)

1979  R100T, and the name/brand of the fairing is eluding me at the moment, but I've seen those before..

That's my guess, anyway.

so close yet so far - Some say this is the holly grail of fairings - try again - they are getting pretty hard to find - tom
Title: Re: I dragged another one home today!
Post by: tvrla on February 24, 2012, 09:29:38 AM
It's a 1980 or 81 if the 80mph speedo is original. Who knows what the bike was originally, if it was a plain R100, that would make it a T.

The fairing is a Rabid Transit. Very aerodynamic - good fairings.

So how much did you steal it for?

Bing Bing Bing - we had a winner - That didn't take long - Didn't steal it - I had top step up to the pay window on this one but I like the bike - I'll post some pix's later - it is a 1980 R100T- I'm not a purest - so I like the mods that have been made to this bike - it's ready to ride anywhere - tom

A little history about Don Vesco - Hell of a guy
******************************************************
Don Vesco bio taken from their website http://www.teamvesco.com

Don Vesco, driver, and co-creator of the Turbinator with his brother Rick Vesco.
Don currently holds 18 motorcycle and 6 automotive records and held the Motorcycle LSR record for 19 years at 318.598 MPH.

Don has turned the fastest time in history in a motorcycle at 333.117 and the fastest time in a wheel-driven vehicle at 459.021.

1955 -- First ran a motorcycle at Bonneville Salt Flats at age 16.

1961-1962 -- Road raced RC 161 Honda 250cc, 4 cylinder for American Honda Co.

1963 -- Won the 125-mile U.S. Grand Prix Open Class at Daytona Beach, Florida on a Yamaha 250 cc, providing Yamaha its first ever American victory.

1963 -- Became a member of the exclusive Bonneville 200 MPH Club in John Vesco's (Father) # 444 Offy powered 4 wheel streamliner with a 222 MPH average.

1970 -- On Sept. 17, Don was the first person to drive a motorcycle at more than 250 MPH, with a two way average speed of 251.924 MPH over a measured mile, in this motorcycle streamliner powered by twin Yamaha 350 cc engines.

1973 -- Don added 40 inches to the middle of the 11 streamliner and replaced the 350cc engines with two Yamaha 750 cc engines.

1974 -- On Oct. 1, Don set a new AMA record with an average speed of 281.702 MPH at Bonneville, with a motorcycle streamliner powered by twin Yamaha TZ750 road racing engines.

1975 -- Sept. 15, Don was the first motorcyclist to exceed 300 MPH, setting a new AMA record in the Silverbird of 303.928 MPH for the mile and 302.657 for the kilometer.

1978 -- Aug. 25, set a new record at 315.892 with two 1015 cc turbocharged Kawasaki modified KZ-900 engines. On Aug. 28, the record was raised to 318.598 MPH during filming ofABC Wide World of Sports TV special. On Sept. 27, during Speed Week, Don turned the fastest speed of the meet, including cars, at 333.117 MPH.

October 1978, Don crashed the Lightning Bolt I at El Mirage Dry Lake after setting a record at 209.302 MPH. Most of streamliner body was destroyed but Don wasn't injured.

1980 -- Built motorcycle streamliner with two turbocharged 6 cylinder Kawasaki 1300 cc engines. Had aluminum wheels and timing belt driven drive train.

1982 -- Constructed a 4 wheel(6) streamlined vehicle for world record attempts using a turbocharged Drake-Offenhauser Indy engine. Had 2 rear wheels, 2 side wheels and 1 front wheel. Front of vehicle used the drivers compartment from the Lightning Bolt I. Rain canceled meet at Bonneville.

1983 -- Rained out at Bonneville. In November, set a record at 210.280 at El Mirage Dry Lake in Elliott Estrines fuel streamliner powered by a 1015 cc turbocharged Kawasaki modified KZ-900 engine.

1984 -- In June, set a record at 188.679 at El Mirage Dry Lake in Elliott Estrine's fuel streamliner powered by a 960 cc turbocharged Kawasaki modified KZ-900 engine. At Bonneville, made four runs with Skytracker using a 2600cc turbocharged Drake-Offenhauser engine. Speed of 235 was attained before meet was shut down due to rain.

1985 -- Qualified for record runs with Skytracker at 318 mph. Blew a rear tire on record runs and crashed end-over-end 5 times at estimated speed of 350 MPH. Car was destroyed, Don received slight concussion and broken bone in right foot.

1986-1987 -- Joined forces with brother Rick on the construction of a new twin engine car.

1988 -- The new twin engine car's first runs reach 285 MPH.

1989 -- Car was clocked at speed of 351 MPH with air speed indication over 390 MPH.

1992-1995 -- Hired by BMW Motorcycle Co. to ride as a team in a series of races called The Battle of The Legends, a race that attracted 52,000 spectators at Datona in 1995.

1996 -- Raced the legend series with BMW Motorcycles including a race in Hockenheim, Germany. First runs of TeamVesco gas turbine powered LSR car at Bonneville.

1997 -- Turned 349 at Bonneville Speed Week in Turbinator car. Problems with drive train prevented further runs. Turned 439 MPH in kilo at World Finals. Set Bonneville Nationals gas turbine record at 400.833 MPH.

1999 -- Inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in July. Set new Bonneville gas turbine record and Land Speed Record at 417.529 MPH in August at Speedweek and 427.832 MPH in September at the World of Speed.

She fits right in with the family - Think I'll order a Corbin Gunfighter seat for it - that will give it a touch of the Cafe look that is so popular right now - tom

The saddle on there looks like a Russell Day-long - if it is, despite its un-aerodynamic appearance, it is one of the best saddles for an airhead if you're planning to do any 600+ mile days..

I hated the one that I had on my 88R100RT for around town, but as soon as I rode more than a hundred miles away from home or so, I got to putting it back on.

Looks like it has Siebenrock valve covers - are there some interesting engine upgrades in there?

Isn't that the San Jose's "CC product's" Enlarged Valve covers?
I remember it from a product catalog I have waaaay back in 1996, and I've been dying to get my hands on a pair.

Yep _ it's a day long - Their shop is just a coupler hours North of the house - I have had 3 airheads with the daylong seats - - plus I did a ride-in where they actually measured my butt & built my seat for my Goldwing while I waited - they had me set on the bike a couple of times during the day to get the fit just right -

I'm going with a Corbin on this one - they are a couple hours south of me - I think it will look pretty cool - If I'm going on a long ride I take the Ultra or the RT but your right - Day-Long builds a really nice seat - The key to their seats is the width & the width is supported with a spring to give your thights support - but it also can cause problems when you come to a stop & try to flat foot it - unless your long legged

One of the guys on another forum lives in Santa Rosa said they were CC Products valve covers for sure & very rare! - I paid $3,750.00 for the bike - not bad when you look at the work & material that went into this bike - I'm very please that I not only found the bike but was able to buy it - I have a 3 bike rule - no more than 3 bikes in the garage but it was love at first sight - But there are hidden cost - all of a sudden my wife is talking new sewing machine - women - they just don't understand  >:( :)

Now I'm being told the bike has Krauser 4 valve heads? I guess i need to pull a valve cover? If it does thats pretty rare stuff? A  set of Krauser heads sold on e-bay for $2,600.00

This bike is getting more interesting all the time - tom

Tom - You got faulty information - someone didn't know what he was looking at. Those aren't Krauser heads, normal BMW valve covers won't fit the Krausers, and yours are the CC products cool covers for standard BMW heads. They've got an O-Ring seal rather than fiber gaskets which supposedly helps with cooling due to the metal to metal contact with the head.

Anyway, take it from me, you DO NOT have Krauser heads on that bike.

Thanks Spokes - I agree - I did find out that Branch Flowmetrics did do the heads - Their web site shows some impressive work -

I have a couple of calls to voicemails to get the name of the mechanic who did all the engine work - I was told he's in the North West - Seattle or Portland area & is very well known to the Airhead/BMW world -

I have found out the bike started out as a unfaired "S" model. Rear drum - dual disc up front -

It's really a pleasure to see & own a bike that was rebuilt to be a good-looker & a runner as well - Appears nothing but the best in parts & labor was used -

I had a great offer on the bike today but it's not on the market, maybe later but if I had a den big enough I would park it on a turn table - pretty damn thing to look at - at least in my eyes - tom

Tom,

Very nice looking bike, congratulations.  I'm eager to hear how you like the fairing and how it performs out on the road in different conditions.  Looks like the bike is ready for a lot of (x-country) miles.

They love the road, the more miles the better.

I have taken it on some short runs - i'm setting in a semi up-rite position - the fairing takes care of all the air that would hit you in the chest - you do get a facefull of air but my Schuberth C3 takes care of that & the C3 is very quiet - They did make & I think someone still makes a tall touring screen but they are butt ugly - The look the bike now has is just killer for me - I was out in the garage last night checking the bike out some more & my bride came out & ask me if I would be needing a sleeping bag - women - they just don't understand ::)

This is a first for me - I have owned 6 airheads & this is the first one that still had the air pump mounted under the seat & it still has the rubber dust cap on it - Normally guys take these off before they sell the bike  :)

This started out as a 1980 "S" - can anyone tell me what seats will interchange with the bike /5 /6 /7??????? I want to call Corbin & order a Gunfighter - Corbin don't list an "S" - hope they make one that fits this bike - thanks, tom

I wouldn't recommend it unless you have another on-board pump of some kind.  it weighs nothing and doesn't get in the way. Mine has pulled me out of a few difficult emergency situations while on the road.  It's tucked well out of sight and is well fitted from the factory.  And becoming a rare item.

I'm enjoying looking at it also, more pictures?  She's a beauty.

I have a feeling our wives share the same opinions of our passion.

Tom - I thought your bike has the drum rear brake? If so, it's either been changed from the disc the S, RS and RT came with stock, or was a T to begin with. The VIN should be stamped in the right front steering head gusset and it'll tell you what the bike was originally.

Whoever you spoke with at Corbin didn't know the BMW airheads. Your seat was used on the R90S (74-76), 100S, 100RS, RT, and finally all of the models after 1981-84. It's usually known as the S seat, though it's the same one used on the twin shock RSs and RTs.

I like the look of your bike too. It's been well loved!

I was going by what the guy who owned the bike when it was Resto's said - In his ad it stated "The bike is essantially an unfaired "S" model with with drum rear break. This is from his Craiglist List ad - Portland OR - 04-21-2010 -

How did you miss this one 2 years ago Spoke? Nothing personal but I'm happy you missed it  ;D tom

So what does the steering head plaque or the gusset say? Is it an S or a T? Not that it matters much - I don't think there was any difference in the engine or gear box.

My garage, storage, and old van are full - no room for anything more. Two years ago (maybe a bit less) I got the LS and haven't been looking for any more airheads since then. I have lusted after an older guzzi, but thankfully don't have the cash for one. I'm sure if I did, I'd figure out a way to shoe-horn it in somewhere. (I'm sick, really sick!)

So the bike came from Portland. Maybe I know the previous owner - what's his name?

I don't have a name - there was another owner since Portland - I bought it from a guy in Fresno, CA -

I'm also out of room - I got a call last week from a guy who found me on goggle - I hadn't seen him since the mid-60's! In 1964 I was a young guy working in my dads service station & this guy would pass the gas station 4 or 5 tines a day riding his Honda Chopper - so cool with the extended forks - Peanut tank -  So when he called the other night - what was the 1st thing I ask him - What ever happen to your old 305 chopper - Guess what - He said it was out in the "BARN"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - He ask me if I still liked motorcycles  ::) 8-) ::) 8-) ::) I said yeah - then he said I could  "HAVE" the old Honda if i wanted it :D :D :D :D :D :D :D it's about a 3 hour drive to his place - Guess that a hundred bucks worth of gas - I don't have room for a project - I don't have room for a project - This thing has been setting for 30/40 years!~ The carbs? Piston’s frozen? Rotten tires? Rust? I'm getting to old for this stuff but god how when I was 16 years old i would drool when he look so cool riding buy with his bright orange Bell 3/4 brain bucket on - I wonder if I could look cool a riding a 1964 Honda Old School Chopper - May I better go for a bike ride & just eye ball it & see just what shape it's in - Maybe the barn is climate control ::) or maybe it has holes in the roof :'( Guess there's only one way to find out & I might as well drive the truck over – Yes – some of us are sick & there ain’t no pill to cure it.

I'm glad there is no pill for it. There are a lot worse sicknesses to have. My brother collects old boats like he is starting his own navy. And yes they really are a hole in the water that you dump money into. I'll take all the old bike projects I can get my hands on. And when I run out of room I'll rent a long term storage space to house the parts. When I finally take that last ride someone is going to have fun going through it all!

Hell yeah! Get that sucker! It's not just any old Honda - it's got sentimental value!!!

Better not pass that one up!

Is it the Scrambler or SuperHawk? Can't imagine anyone making a chopper out of a 305 Dream. :)

My first bikes were Hondas, but never had a Superhawk - I think one of those would be pretty cool. But of course, I would un-chop it and put it back to stock. They're just too cool stock.

Kind of interesting about the beemer - I knew a guy (it's not 'know' because he was a big jerk and royally pissed me off) in town here who had a blue one like yours with the Rabid Transit. Don't know if he's still got it or sold it - haven't been in touch with him for at least five years, though I do see him now and then at tech days.

I called him tonight - guess I'll drive over in the morning - He a few years older than me - I thnk he's about 72 or 73 now - Not many guys hang on to stuff that long - It wasn't a deam - I'm thinking super hawk - were going back almost 50 years! He said tonight it has always been under a roof & covered up? I won't take it for free - if he won't take money I'll take one of my hand made knives along - I'm guessing the old girl is worth 500 unrestored? He said it was running good when he parked it but doesn't recall how many years ago that was  :) I move the other stuff around in the shop & found enough room for the lift - It's going to be difficult but some time this summer I want to get back to 3 bikes! I like elbo room -

I thought they went to that style of VIN in 81. As far as I know, the R100T model was made in 79 and 80. After that, they just called the plain naked bikes R80 or R100. No slashes or anything else.

Anyway, it's plain yours isn't an S, RS or RT (rather, wasn't), and started life as a naked R100. Nothing to be ashamed of, it was essentially the same bike as the S etc, just no bodywork. I've got a 1980T and like the fact it came with a drum rear brake. It's a great bike, and I converted it to an RS. Travelled all over the west and into Canada on that one.

If your bike is a 74 to 84 with a seat cowl like that, it's the one!

I wonder why they said it wouldn't fit???

The only difference between the one pictured and yours is paint color.

You actually coming to Portland, or just trying to scare me?  ;)

(don't know if I can afford a pepsi - all I drink anymore is water, and fruit juice)  ;D

I was talking to a gal who I don't think she really knew what she was talking about & she wouldn't connect me with someone in the shop - But there might have been anyone there who speaks English when I called - I was thinking of just taking my seat down there & show them what I had but it's been a little cool the past few days so since I had your personal guarantee!

I ride up to Seattle at least once every year - I have a daughter up there plus this year I want to go to the new  LaMay Museum in Tacoma - Largest car museum in the world & from what I understand they did things right - 1st class all the way - It's not only the museum I think it's a complete motor sports complex - perfect for the bucket list! So yep - I get to Portland every year - Your traffic just keeps getting worse every year

Tom,  that is a sharp-looking seat.  Since I could not get my wife to ride with me, I've been keeping my eyes open for a solo seat.  But the prices are somewhat prohibitive.  The Gunfighter is a much better alternative.  Corbin's website says that this seat is for R models CS, RS and RT.  Wondering if the exclusion of the S and T models is intentional.  I'll give them a call tomorrow.  If I get the same answer that you got, I'll bide my time see how it fits your bike.  I believe our bikes share the same cowl - but then I'm no expert.
Thanks for the find!!

I think Corbin is more Harley oriented and beemers are a side-line. Or perhaps you're right, no one there speaks english except the receptionist/phone answerer.

The CS uses the same seat as the S. CS stands for Classis S, and was pretty much a 90S except for snowflake wheels (in the US, wires in other parts of the world), and Bings instead of Dellortos.

The T, however had the non cowled seat and was probably the last to use it. The non-cowled seat, though fits on the bike, is totally different. It's like the /5,6,7 seat.

I haven't been to the LaMay museum either, but have heard of it. One of these days I'll get up that way.

I called Capital Cycle and they confirmed that the 74-84 R100 S, RT and T share the same cowl.  If it doesn't fit yours, I"ll buy it from you,  That should save Spokes a Pepsi  :)
