Wow. I thought the R65 GS was a myth. :o

Not a myth:

It has 26mm carbs and only 27HP
It's a rare airhead that's substantially slower than mine.
And how about the fact that the photo's are not necessarily of the actual bike for sale ?

I can't recall his name, but we did have a member of the forum who bought one of these bikes a couple years ago. or, perhaps he took a street model R65 and modified it to GS setup using R65 GS parts and pictures.
The army/military is more concerned with tractability and the ability to operate on various qualities of fuel more than top speed, so it is no surprise that these were fitted with the lower insurance class configured R65 engine at the time.
That could be a fun rig - it has the late 80s monolever swingarm too. Once could drop in an R80 engine pretty easily for more excitement - provided one didn't try to squeeze between too many trees!

Somebody in Denmark (I think...) modified one into a cafe racer. It seemed like an odd choice to me but sometimes you work with what you have.
Another member made one from a standard R65 but used some non-bmw forks and stuff. Really clever work, I met him at Redmond. His is probably a better dual sport than the real GS.
Since I'm not that clever I would like to find an R65 or R80GS. If it has a bad motor I'll put mine in it; it has plenty of power.
