Title: Side Panel ALERT
Post by: montmil on April 11, 2008, 01:30:13 PM
I had posted a WTB for some R65 side panel/battery covers in the Trading Post area and got some helpful responses.  My thanks, folks, for putting me on the right trail.

Here's the latest update on my search for availability and pricing.

Hammersley had the parts on their website, in primer paint, priced at $27.47 each.  I ordered both panels along with some small front fork pieces/parts on-line yesterday evening.  Got an email today stating that "BMW" has raised the price of the covers to $50.76 each. Gag me with a spoon!  [smiley=furious3.gif]

Grabbed the telephone and called Chicago BMW and spoke with Javier in their parts dept regarding availability and price on the plastic bits.  Chicago priced them at $25.00 but said they would have to order them. However, they would sell them at the stated price of 25 bucks if I purchased them today even if their purchase price was increased.  Nice business integrity.  Needless to say, I did order the panels, plus the other bits I needed to rehab the forks. Adios, Hammersley.

So, If you be looking for replacements, I'd suggest you call Javier muy pronto. Javier esta mi amigo nuevo. And... my local Ace Hardware has the rubber installation grommets - six req'd for two panels - plus I'm ZipTy poor in my shop so I'll definitely secure the new parts to the chassis.

If you're looking, now's a pretty good time to buy.

Carry on.

Monte

Just curious if they gave you a time frame of when they would get the parts to you ?

My last order from them was about 10 weeks from when I placed the order, until I recieved the parts.

The parts were o-rings, seals, nuts, bolts and washers, all common use items.

The small items for the front fork repairs were in stock and were to ship asap via DHL.  Didn't inquire as to delivery time for the side panels as they can be installed whenever they arrive... after I paint 'em black.  The bike is good to go with or w/o the plastics.

The fifty dollars in savings bought a lot of patience from this ol' boy.  Plus. my card will not be charged until they ship from Chicagoland so I'm good with a delayed arrival.

... and speaking of oil seals, bearings, nuts, bolts and washers; even in our modest-sized city of Denton, Texas, there are two excellent bolt and bearing retail stores. SAE and metric are available at reasonable prices compared to the "stealership" prices. Check your local yellow pages and take a sample with you. You just may find the identical "widget" that will help complete your maintenance task.

Recently, my neighborhood Ace Hardware store supplied the correct O-rings to help me overhaul my Co2 pellet rifle. Them ol' pesky squirrels raid my bird feeders at their own risk.  [smiley=rifle.gif]

Good tip on the covers. A co-werker of mine just lost one between Phoenix and Coolidge, AZ. We found it a couple of days later. Unfortunatly it didn't blow safely off into the creosote brush and was flattened by traffic. Now it is a wall ornament attesting to the wisdom of tying it to the frame!

Holy  crap, a nearly 100% increase all at once?  :o
Somebody at BMW must be watching the sidecover trade over on Ebay and decided to cash in!!

Glad to see that Chicago can get them for you & not try to burn you a new one.
They are indeed good folks to deal with, and generally have about the best prices, but they are rather...uhh...ahem..."casual" about shipping out their orders.
I can attest from personal experience that they won't get too flustered if you need to call them a time or 6 to check on your stuff... ;)

Just called today to order a right side cover and some tuneup parts. I also talked with Javier.  He said they'd have to order the cover but would ship the points/condensor but would only charge me shipping once.  I thought that was great and he said he'd put the order through.  He called me 5 minutes later and said he looked in another place and had the cover in stock and would ship out the entire order today!

Like Chicago BMW a lot - thanks for the tip,
