Another divergence from standard for my bike, I came across an old post on here from 2007 by ScottColumbus showing the old style valve covers on his R65 with some lovely shots of the port of Hamburg,

I liked the look so much I fitted a set recently, here are a couple of pics from last weekend

Nice bike RSMike. I am a big fan of the older style valve covers, That's one of the first thing I did to mine when I started rebuilding it. I had mine powder coated satin black and them polished the center ribs. Why? Because I could and liked the way it looks. Just as an fyi there are definite left and right side valve covers with the older style. When they are on the correct side the center ribs are horizontal and when they are switched the center ribs are slightly elevated in the front. An old time airhead rider pointed that out to me at a rally. Needless to say I had them switched.

The newer style are also "handed" and really look strange if switches around...

Ditto, your bike looks very tasty, Is that an LS seat?
On the rocker covers, I knew the originals were handed, but read somewhere else that the rounded ones were not, so now I am intrigued, The ones I got were not marked so I just put them on in the order they came out of the box, :), but I am studying them now and can't tell the difference.
One thing I should say is I opted for the "high quality pattern" parts from Motobins ( half the price, pic below), although even then I can't really tell the difference between these and the OEM's?

RSMike, Is it just me or is your mufflers pointed a bit too high?
yes well spotted Julio the brackets that attach the mufflers to the frame were installed wrong way around by a PO and the more upswept look is the result, whether that was by design or accident, who knows? but as it gives a slightly more sporty look, I decided to leave that way.
If I ever want to attach pannier frames, they may cause a problem, but so far not planning that.

Thanks ScottyinTex. It's been a while getting there. It statred life as an 82 LS that I found with 8k original miles. The original owner had it three years and died in an automobile accident. It was leaned against a shed for the 23 next years exposed to the elements just rotting away. There was no piece of soft anything left when I found it. I've invested way more than its worth into getting it back in shape but 1) I did it because I enjoy it. 2) My son has grown up helping to work on it and 3) someday it will be his.
The only thing left is to replace the battery covers. I have them gloss black and am putting the decals from an earlier airhead on it. The ones that show the cc size. I have two sets of repro decals in blue and silver, one for 600cc and one for 750cc. Cut off the 7 and the 6 and swap them and voila! 650cc on an R65
