Thinking about getting a screen.
Maybe something like the Givi A210
(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.motorworks.co.uk%2Fbmw%2Fprodimages%2Flg%2FFAA00210.jpg&hash=a60746626e9935889445b5d58fca72d84f3a1ad9)
Anyone tried one of these or similar, Height above top of headlight is 36.5 cm

Or there's this possibility...

Rather a sporty look for the R65. There are Euro as well as American dealers. Just search the main website.

I mounted a German MRA screen on my Triumph Trophy. With the lip at the top of the slightly higher screen, buffeting for rider and passenger is greatly reduced as is the crosswind component.
Excellent quality with these screens. Not exactly cheap.

Givi A31 with 4 point mounting - works good!
-
Thanks guys
The Trophy is a great bike Monte, love them
What I liked about the Givi is its not too small so might give some protection without being too much, also good price and can pick one up local.
On the other hand, now that you have got me looking at MRA, the MRA vario screens are supposed to be great and actually do not look so bad in these pics from my friend at BMW Bayer:

Its similar in price to the Givi A31 that Bali has (by the time you add a mounting bracket to that one), i.e pricey, but if its as effective as many say maybe worth it.
I liked the standard BMW screen on my 1100RS when I had that, but the buffeting at certain speeds could get annoying and that's something I want to avoid, which I guess is what the vario design aims to reduce.
-
OK, so I decide the MRA Vario was a bit too high tech / modern for my R65, so ruled it out, I considered the R 65 R CLASSIC from MRA that Monte saw, but (from what I could tell) the slightly higher height and simpler fitting, price and availability swung me to the Givi A210.
As I know we like pictures, ;), here are some.
Test ride and opinions to follow

Hi RSMike
I see you have a Galway reg plate, did you buy the bike from there? I lived at Friars Hill for a couple of years in the early 90's, Galway is a very special place.
My wife's family are all based in Templmore, home of the Gardai!
:-?

Hi Chris,
Its a UK bike orig, imported to Ireland (Galway) in 1991 , it had 3 further owners in Galway up to 2006, when it moved next door to County Clare, which is where I acquired it from.
So it was probably buzzing around Galway around the same time you were there in the 90's, 8-)
Cheers
Mike
But yes Galway is a nice spot

Mike by the photo it looks as if the Givi screen fits on the headlamp mount bolts and nowhere else, is that correct? (That is, no handlebar clamps?)
-
It suits the bike too!

Yes, very easy fitting, ideally the adjustable bracket either side should go inside the headlamp clamps, but I ended up putting them outside the clamps, (as per first photo on this thread from motorworks), they are brushed SS so look OK.
The reason they are better outside is the one thing the screen contacts on the instrument binnacle is the trip meter zero'ing thingy, I even added a couple of extra washers inside the screen brackets to avoid putting too much pressure on the zero'ing thingy.
OK, test report.
With screens there are (at least) 4 variables, screen height, screen angle, seat height and rider height.
That's why its not often easy to get an ideal setting.
Obviously the height and angle are interlinked on this and most screens, i.e. highest screen angle = highest screen height (pushed forward position), lowest angle = lowest screen position pulled back position.
Luckily with this screen on the R65, the full range of adjustment is available.
Seat height is obviously fixed on the R65, as is rider height ,though the latter is a very important consideration, i.e. what suits me may very well not suit you.
So bottom line with this screen the only position that works for me is the most pulled back position, any further forward and I start to get whistling noises above 40mph, and in the most forward position, I get severe helmet shaking turbulence, I'm a shorty (5' 7").
With the screen in the pulled back position my helmet is "just" in clear air, A bit disappointing (but not surprising), I was hoping I might have the option to use in the most forward position & ride with helmet visor (shield) up, but at least there is a position that works and it also looks best in this position.
One other variable of course is bar height, (I'm told mine are higher than standard).

Thanks Mike, I've found it on Givi website. There's a dealer near here. Regarding your other post on fuel hoses, I could not understand why your layout was so neat while mine was such a spaghetti, took me a while looking at your photo before the penny dropped: some PO had installed the T-piece the wrong way round. Easy. All done now, but sometimes I think my brain is getting a bit scrambled these days!

Hello
This is my first post - i will introduce myself elsewhere -
BUT
I've a clear screen i've taken off an R65 i just bought.
I've no idea what it's worth, feel free to make an offer
Hope it helps
I'll have to add pics later as i can't attach on my 1st post
-
I put a Givi A32 four point attachment on my R65...and loved it.
-
Scotty, that does look very nice indeed, has more of a fairing look, I imagine you are well protected behind that?
Do you have some sort of padding behind the screen (around the headlight) ?
-
No ....no padding...there is a slight space between windshield and headlight all the way around...just enough to get the tip of your little finger in between them. So, they do not rub or rattle. Here is another angle shot.
-
Scotty,
Every TIME i see that rig I fall in love with it...
It just looks so good!
:) :D
-
OK, I fell out of love with my Givi screen pretty quickly, The only position that worked for me without turbulence was directing everything onto my helmet, i.e lots of bugs and rather breezy.
My latest attempt is an Emgo Fairing /screen, Its kinda a cheap S-Fairing type of thing.
Its not a straight fitting to the R65, some cutting /modification is needed to the headlight fairing, though I found this relatively easy with a fine jigsaw blade.
(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi719.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww198%2Fmiketruss1%2FIMG_1962.jpg&hash=669007f69499e3508b356d74b7ba86cee2f8a0f9)
Two cuts as shown above to clear the indicator stalks, I guesstimated these cuts and it worked OK, they are probably larger than required but are mostly hidden, if you are more patient than me, ;) and are good at measuring up you can probably do a neater job
(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi719.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww198%2Fmiketruss1%2FIMG_1963.jpg&hash=b684b831019be5767400f0ad5deb33e301630ab5)
And one long cut as shown above to clear the instrument pod, One issue I had with the fine jigsaw blade I used was heating, causing the cuts to melt and refuse as they cooled, if you move the blade back and forth it helps keep the cut open, or possibly there is a better tool than a jigsaw for doing this type of cutting.
After that the next thing that needs adjustment are the brackets provided, I was told by the supplier I would need to make up my own as the supplied ones are for Jap bikes and will not work on BMW, Not sure why that would be, aren't headlight fittings pretty standard?
Anyway I found with some manipulation and bending, I could get the supplied brackets to fit, again I just used trial and error method:
(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi719.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww198%2Fmiketruss1%2FIMG_1965.jpg&hash=b991c8370f9d4a6605a3501255de0940d92caa1c)
(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi719.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww198%2Fmiketruss1%2FIMG_1968.jpg%3Cbr+%2F%3E&hash=be00e38a7554fadf7543ff25514fea66d3e00330)
One thing I recommend is fitting the screen to the headlight fairing before attaching the whole thing to the bike , I attached the headlight fairing on its own first [smiley=wall.gif], and while its possible to then attach the screen, its a bit tricky.
Finally I drilled & cable tied the headlight fairing to the brake bracket on the handlebar clamps on each side
(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi719.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww198%2Fmiketruss1%2FIMG_1970.jpg&hash=cdfd67bf07a0632e902dc171708727fbead6d885)
I'm happy with how the end result looks, though I have not test ridden yet, so remains to be seen if the riding experience is any better than with the Givi, and how solid my fitting is.

Riding update:
Did about 50 miles over the weekend with this screen and the good news is absolutely no buffeting or increased wind noise, if anything my perception was less wind noise. With my height (5'7") and bar set up (high) my head is clear of the top of the screen so to be honest it doesn't feel much different from riding without a screen, though there is less wind blast on the body at higher speeds.
I am happy with this, To my eye it looks right on the bike and doesn't spoil the ride.
I bought a set of low bars to go with this screen as I was sure I would need them, however now second thinking if I need them.
-
Mike where did you get your Emgo kit? I just ordered the Givi from a local m/c dealer but everyone has heard of Givi, I've never heard of Emgo. BTW I had Givi luggage for years on several bikes it's far better than the Krauser/BMW stuff. On which I wasted several hundred £. So I had a prejudice in favour of Givi!
-
These fairings are manufactured in Taiwan for the US market, I understand Emgo is a somewhat more value oriented brand in the US offering also things like a sturdy luggage top case and I am not sure what else.
The good news is this fairing/screen is available both in the UK and the US. Its somewhat cheaper when sourced from the US, I got this one from Harbers Cycles in Viola, Arkansas! for US$69.95 and USPS Priority Mail International of US $38.95, Grand Total US $108.65, about €76 or UK£66.
I purchased from Harbers via fleabay:
http://ebayitem.com/220816489611
Also available from Jenks Bolts in the UK for £109
http://jenksbolts.motoevolution.co.uk/bolts/product_info.php?cPath=47&products_id=150&osCsid=1beb2073d0ad26aa999b92e8a59dc203
Or from triumph-online for UK £94.95
http://www.triumph-online.co.uk/bonneville-thruxton-bikini-fairing-4047-p.asp
USPS shipping from the US is fast (under a week) and tracked, chance you take ( at least in Ireland) is customs randomly stop packages coming from the US and you could end up paying VAT and get a delayed delivery, I got lucky this time and it came straight through (tip, shipped to an office address, I have found packages are not stopped)
If you are considering, take a look at this pic to try and judge if your extra instruments will clear as I know the Givi gave you some problems in that respect:
(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi719.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww198%2Fmiketruss1%2FIMG_1980.jpg&hash=e8f114b9a223d61d7f2242cd5a4e9f439da8f00c)

Thanks for the photo - makes clear it would not work on my R65 due to the two extra pods, nowhere near enough room for them. I'll get back to working on the Givi. Didn't realise cutting a screen without damaging it was such a long business - keep finding myself reaching for the tinsnips!
