Title: Cleaning cylinder fins
Post by: stevie on April 12, 2008, 02:36:55 PM
Hi all
Think I remember reading on here a while back the best way of cleaning off the "fur" on the cooling fins was to use a nylon scouring pad. If so what would you guys suggest I use this in conjunction with?
thanks Steve.

I remember reading that a green nylon pad wrapped around a paint stir stick, lubed with WD-40, works well.  I haven't tried it.

yea that works, but you kinda have to have a back and forth motion to it or else the metal will look weird, like 2 different shades of silver and once you start in one spot, you have to do everywhere to make things look even. also to some people, it scratches the metal, so you might want to test your pad of choice on an inconspicous area like underneath the oil pan to see if you like the results. personally i get the huge brown scotch brite pads and cut them to size so the pad can fit in small spaces or do large areas like the engine casing.

Check auto body supply shops for different grades of 3M Scotchbrite or similar products.  I have some 2000 grit that I use during final finish on my Gustav Stickley-style furniture making projects. Lots of grades in between.  The green is kinda rough. Try the gray or maroon colors.

BTW, polishing is simply "aligning scratches". Although them there scratches can be pretty fine [smiley=thumbup.gif]
