Title: Mac exhaust for LS -- experiences, thoughts?
Post by: Cano on May 12, 2011, 10:32:09 PM
I've got the opportunity to buy a Mac exhaust system for my ls, still in shipping boxes from April of 1987.  It's a semi-gloss black, and appears fairly well made.  Differences include the single, slightly v-shaped crossover in front, and the muffler design.  A picture of the Mac compared to the stock muffler is attached.

I kind of like the idea of keeping black exhaust after the stock system dies.  Has anyone had any experience with these as far as fit, durability, sound, whatever?   Opinions on black vs. chrome/stainless?  Fair price?

I bought one of these new about 6 or 7 years ago, I'm planning to put it on after my stock exhaust becomes too rusty to salvage.   The muffler may end up with less clearance than stock for saddlebag clearance on the right side, but may be OK.   The claim of the MAC system is that the stock centerstand usage is retained, but I can't say how true this is as I've not put it on yet - though  it at least APPEARS that could be true.

It is possible that carb adjustment and/or jetting changes may be necessary.  From a quality perspective, it appears to be pretty good - not as great as a STAINTUNE though, but few systems are..

I have the MAC mufflers on my R100 and the Dawg and if you like a bit throatier than stock sound you'll love 'em.  They're not obnoxious but have a nice "means business" tone.  The only clearance issues I have is there are no indents on the bottoms for the axle to clear so te muff needs to be rotated up to get the rear axle out.

Thanks.  I don't think these black ones have been made for some time, so I'll probably buy and hang on until the stock system rusts through.
