Title: Gabrielle Giffords, motorcyclist
Post by: AndrewB on January 09, 2011, 11:33:15 PM
Just read this article on the Hell For Leather site regarding Congresswoman Gifford's motorcycle advocacy and long history riding.

For those interested here's a link and photo from the article.

Let's hope she pulls thru.

Aw sh|t!  Before I was sad.

Now I am crying..   :'(

Life can be cruel and short so get out and ride ride ride baby!

A young lady at my church passed away three days ago after a short bout of the big C.  She was 36.  Elizabeth Fitch RIP.

Good advice and we must not forget how short life can be. Every day counts.
How could someone get so angry at her to try to kill her?? :'(

I had to turn the news off....I simply could not watch. When the father of that little girl who died began to speak. I grabbed the control and turned the TV off................... was to sad....so, so terrible. As the father of two daughters, grand father of four grand daughters it hit so close to home. Let’s make something positive come from this....just try to be a bit nicer, rein in our frustrations, anger and just maybe others will too.

I salute the bystanders who subdued the SOB while he was attempting to reload his weapon.

News reports I've heard state this deranged wacko was acting alone. Truth? It was reported on TV, so... ?

Have you ever listened to any of the radio "political personalities" spewing their often vile rhetoric? Some political websites even 'target' -as in cross-hairs- individuals that have opposing view points. So wrong.

I fear our nation may implode; to be reduced to anarchy.

My oldest granddaughter, Madeline, was born on September 13, 2001, two days after the young Greene girl.  So sad.  She should be selling Girl Scout cookies.

No, I didn't know that Ms. Giffords was a rider.  My prayers that she will pull through.

I actually saw this picture on one of the news reports - very briefly.  We watched the news for TOO long tonight - looking for weather and all we got was the shooting.

Sad, sad stuff.  If everyone in the world were only as nice as the folks on this board.  We're international and although we have different opinions we are civil and respectful of each other - the way the world should be. . .

The shooter looks pretty crazy, if you ask me.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40997616/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/?GT1=43001

But what adds pain to misery is the junk at the end of the article:

Meanwhile, the leader of Westboro Baptist Church, an anti-gay Kansas-based church best known for picketing the funerals of slain U.S. soldiers and gay-pride gatherings, said its members will picket the funerals of the 9-year-old girl and five others killed in Saturday's attack. In a video, Fred Phelps says God sent the shooter to avenge the nation's sins.

"Thank God for the violent shooter," Phelps proclaims.

"We will remind the living that you can still repent and obey. This is ultimatum time with God."

We have whackos defending our whackos!  :-/

It is truly a tragedy - our prayers are with all the families and with Congresswoman Giffords that she is able to make a full recovery after such a horrific injury.

As an aside - does anyone know where that photo came from?    I ask, because I had heard on the news that she enjoyed motorcycle riding and that she advocated no-helmet requirements for motorcyclists in her state.   That had me wondering if she was an H-D rider, as so many fans of that marque seem to be of the "no-helmet" persuasion.   She is still a classy lady in any measure, but if she is a helmet wearing airhead fan, I hold her in even higher esteem!

I would guess that she is in support of less legislation, as opposed to less safety.
No doubt her husband always wears a helmet when he goes on a ride! ;)

You got that right - I head heard that he was on the roster for the last spaceshuttle flight in a couple months - but perhaps he'll be giving up his spot now.  I know that I would.

They need to take the shooter apart mentally and find out what went wrong .

I fear this will not be the end of this type of action, I hope I'm wrong .

It's a tradegy. Surely no one who is sane can mean to shoot a little girl or any one else just for political reasons. The universal right to bear arms is a genuine puzzle to us on this side of the pond. Maybe a mental health check is in order before someone can purchase a weapon.

I heard an interview with a person who spends alot of time analyzing the wackos that commit crimes such as this - and it confirmed a theory I've held all along:   There are people out there who are just determined to hate and crave being noticed, they look for any "cause" or purpose to use as an idea or excuse to target their hideous actions.  They will do violence to get their 15 minutes of fame and their moment on the soapbox to proselytize, and that violence will take whatever form they can arrange - shootings, improvised explosives, fire, poison, etc.   At their core, it really boils down to just that, regardless of how they got to be that way -  What follows is my own thought on this:

HOW people like this get to be this way can be anyone's guess - maybe mommy didn't breastfeed them or they were bullied as teenagers or whatever - they feel angry, rejected, and are looking to get their chance to get their footnote in recorded history, however they can.

Many/most of these types are delusional and think that they are spiritual leaders of some sort, or philosophers needing to impart their "wisdom" on the illiterate masses.   They think that their actions will serve a higher purpose.  But they are all just basically angry, ignorant, potentates of their own imaginary empires - and cut from similar cloth, be they Ted Kaczynski, Timothy McVeigh, Derrick Bird, or Jerod Loughner.  Rather than providing them with a stage to work from, we should just put them down like the irreparably sick dogs that they are.   Give them a fair trial, followed by a first class hanging..

If this person was "sane" enough to plan out this horrible scheme in advance and act upon it, then surely, he is "sane" enough to be held accountable, stand trial, and be suitably punished for it.  I am sure that his lawyers will do their best to convince the juries otherwise, but I hope he pays the ultimate price that he exacted from 6 of his victims thus far.

Wonderful news about her today - she hasn't spoken yet but  has opened her eyes and is able to move her arms and legs, fingers and toes in response to requests.  She is still partly sedated and has a long road ahead, but I am hoping to one day see her at a BMWMOA or BMWRA rally sometime in the future.

Miracles do happen !

I hope she recovers with little impact on her brain functions.

It's such a shame that kooks like this cause so much mayhem and injure or kill so many people.

We all have our problems with politicians but I think the vitriolic nature of politics here in the US is getting out of hand.  Hopefully one good thing will come out of this and that is that the hateful vitriole will stop.  It might  be a good thing to write to the politician/party that is doing it and give them your feedback...no matter which party he/she belongs to.

Politics had nothing to do with this particular incident, the bozo was just a freak nutter...

Justin I sure don't want to get into any political discussion on this board (especially since it's not my country) and I agree that there is something wrong with this guy (if I can believe what I have seen/read in the media) but my belief is that the probabilities are that if a politician gets shot then politics has much to do with why he/she was shot.

Reports I've heard, plus interviews with some of his "friends" indicate he didn't care much for politics, didn't pay much attention to news, and was not a talk-radio fan.  He apparently was cheesed at the Congresswoman over an perceived slight by her at some event he went to where he directed some questions her way and was not satisfied...

Sorry Rob.  Can you get it at home?

The gist of the vid is that she has recognition of husband at her side and is doing things that she did before the shooting: messaging his neck and fiddling with his wedding band.  It is quite personal and poignant and somewhat miraculous.

The speed at which she appears to be coming back from this is phenomenal!  Must be the "Airhead blood" in her veins!  [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

Just for the record, I am so tired of hearing about her, I could scream. OK, too bad, feel sorry for her, but there are a million people a day dieing, starving, shot, stabbed, tortured, etc, all over the world, enough already with the media circus.

Ok, flame me, but just my opinion, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Hi Trips,

We don't flame people around here.  THAT is what makes this place different (better) than the rest?   Perhaps its just the R65 ethos that keeps things civil.   8-)

Rob - definitely a different kind of Congress-critter!
