Two days ago i was riding to work, and was sitting behind a car doing about 5-10kmh below the limit. Had a highway patrol come up behind me.
Road split into two, the car in front maintained the right lane so I took the left and drove at the 80kmh limit, slowly passing when he decided with no indication and no idea to change lanes into where i was. I leant hard on my brakes and went to change lanes into where he had been and suddenly saw the cop car (forgot he was there) so I just pulled left into the emergency lane and decided to slow down and let idiots proceed, when the cop flashed all his lights indicated for me to stop and also pulled over the cage driver. He took my name as witness "just in case" and delivered the driver a fine.
The driver told him he saw the cop car and pulled over to get out of his way, and didn't know anyone was in that lane. Well he copped a fine for that, and hopefully he'll look for bikes next time. My headlight was on high beam but that apparently didn't help this time.

Sorry to hear about your excitement, John, but you're just too used to reasonable drivers.
Over here in the land of the distracted soccer mom, the texting teens, and so on, I'd *never* hang out next to a car if I could avoid it. In your situation, I'd have slowed down to let the cop and the driver in front get ahead of me, so I could watch what was going on from a safe distance. Absent the cop, I'd have passed the driver as quickly as was reasonable to get to some more open road.
Hanging out next to a car here is a recipe for an accident.

A friend of mine had a close call up on "The Dragon" in NC a coule of years ago. Some squid was three feet over the yellow line going the opposite direction in a blind right hander. My buddy got it on video...there 's a link somewheres.
