I am not in the mood for spending 100 usd for a new map.Does anyone have a City Navigator North America NT 2008 or 2009 that i can borrow.I have a program that can unlock it for my Unit
  Thank you in advance.

Are there alternative maps??  here in Australia I have also downloaded shonky maps, which is his name and not a reflection on quality.

Shonky is only Australian maps, but possibly someone does something for yankee land.

Shonky is far superior to Garmin when you leave the sealed road.
Inside capital cities, city navigator is still better.

All I have is a very old Mapsource US Roads & Recreation V3.03

It came with my first Legend, which I bought used.

I doubt it would be compatible with a newer GPSr.

Roger that, Bob. This old Eagle Scout still has several compasses on hand but prefers a wristwatch to the sundial. It's that danged daylight savings time on & off again issue. Y'all Arizona folks know about that.  ;)

Hey Monte, Harbor Freight has genyoowine brass compasses with sundial for $2.99, right next to the third hand thingy.  One of those would look cool mounted on your Mexican bike.  Just remember that you can't use it with a magnetic tank bag.  Throws the sundial off. ;D

Since you're at work, Crenshaw, shouldn't you be doing something like, oh, working rather than beating me up?

Now where did I put your favorite boss's telephone number... that would be Theresa's.

At least try and look busy. I'm a master at that when I'm on the school district's dime. ;D

And get that Brit bike making steam, too.

Now you are starting to sound like my wife.  She made me start wearing the arm sling again and telling me that I've been doing to much (like working on m/c's).  That's OK because I've been telling people that she beat me up and broke my collar bone rather than admit to falling off of my scooter! Bob, Bengt and, uh, Monte have totally hijacked this thread.

That's right, we're bad. Bad to da bone.[smiley=nopity.gif]

So solly, yankee fry boy.

Now if you really want to get serious about navigation I have a couple of sextants and an artificial horizon that I could sell. :)

The Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) is the GoTo instrument, IMHO.

That would be fun as a heads-up display, but I think when it is really whacked over, you would be too busy to appreciate it.

Now if you could have software to incorporate gauges, including a HSI and elevation in a video shot from the bike or rider!  That would be neat!

Say what? The HSI is an outstanding instrument for aviation. You'd likely need a sidecar to carry the equipment and antennas that drive this instrument. Don't go IMC without it.   Monte

So why did you bring it up as the go to instrument?

Maybe I missed something.

"...2010 Luddite GPS for Texas..."

"...with a Boy Scout compass/sundial?..."

"Hey Monte, Harbor Freight has genyoowine brass compasses with sundial..."

"...I have a couple of sextants and an artificial horizon..."

As you can see, Rob, this thread has gone pretty comical. I blame Mike Crenshaw. He's always getting me in trouble. That's why I like to hang with him.

Oh sure, put this meandering in the wilderness off on me!

To bring this thread back on track, I just procured a slightly used Garmin Street Pilot 2720 and was able to register it in my name.  Garmin provided a free one time map upgrade when I did that.  Try to register your Garmin if you can, the previous owner has to unregister, but if you can you may be able to get the latest maps.

The unit I bought is new,but the problem is this GPS comes w/o any maps.I don't think I can update something that does not exist

Remember that Garmin has Life Time map updates for a reasonable fee of around $89.-$99. You get a 20 % discount I think if you are an AMA member which is cheap too and you get another roadside assistance deal with your subscription if you include automatic renewal. Discount also applies to purchase price of a Garmin unit. You can purchase 2 times per year from Garmin using the discount so the unit plus the maps for the first year. This info was accurate for 2009 so I hope it still is applicable.

I joined AMA then ordered my Zumo 660, LifeTime maps and have done map updates about 4 times now. It still gets me into the weirdest places at times though with its screwy directions. So bring your real paper maps in addition!!!

Just out of curiousity: do you folks in the US have the same problem we have in Britain: heavy truck drivers using sat navs which are meant for cars and which direct them along country roads which are far to narrow -  they get stuck and some huge breakdown crane has to come and drag them out. They block the road for hours! We do have sat navs for trucks but it seems some drivers use their personal ones which are for cars.

PS but how do they get them to work on a truck's 24 volts?

Buddy of mine did the same thing.I warned him a few times but he did not listen to me.He transported cars and suvs.He stuck under the bridge in Chicago a year ago.the insurance company decided not to pay for his stupidity and now he has a brand new convertible SUV
