Title: What else do you do?
Post by: Bengt_Phorqs on April 08, 2010, 08:50:41 PM
I'm just curious to know what the other hobbies or interests the good folks on this forum do when they aren't riding or wrenching on airheads.  For myself, I've always had an interest in music.  I learned to play the bagpipes about 15 years back and have quite an interesting time with that.  For example, I'm the only person I know that has played "The Barren Rocks of Aden" on the barren rocks of Aden in Yemen.

What about some of you?  -Mike

I feed my fish in Fish World.

And I play with my cat when she gets tired of me playing with the computer.

Winemaker .
Growing and propagating cacti (I have a well 'armed' landscape) .
I'm an aircraft mechanic by profession, so I dabble in aviation outside of work .
Gun owner, and hunter .

Oooo, bagpipes!  My niece is learning to play.  I think she's still cantering, though.  [smiley=beatnik.gif]
I do music as well - but you probably already know that.  I'm in a dixieland band and a big band jazz orchestra.  Play mostly for local gatherings, but keeps me out of trouble...mostly.  Oh yeah, I play cornet/trumpet/flugelhorn most of the time but substitute for the piano player when she's out.

And I spoil my cats, too.

I too play the banjo.  I also fly sailplanes.  Weird.  I also play guitar, surf, cook, kayak, chase a 2 year old around, hike, ski, scuba, garden (I like bamboo).  Dirtbike.  Crotch rocket. Trackdays!  Supermoto.  (Badly.) I have a Fiat 850 spyder. I generally goof around. Lots.  Yes, I work, if you were wondering, and no, I'm not really good at any of the above.  You only go around once.

Bob iam also a fan of cacti (ive only got small ones), love to see a pic of your 'armed' landscape.

I like to grow bonsai trees, cacti, i try to play the bass guitar (but i think iam tone deaf). But i have to say bikes take up a huge part of my free time, riding, cleaning, reading, going to any bike show, races etc...

But gezz... i wish i could play the bass better tho :'(

I used to brew beer and wrote a monograph on Bock beer (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/093738139X/darrylrichmas-20).  But there are so many good micros around now, I just don't feel the need to DIY it any more.

Otherwise, I've been a computer nerd since well before that term existed.  Got interested in the 10th grade, when my high school got a Teletype and a phone connection to a timeshare computer running BASIC (we're talking 1973 here), and even though I'm mostly retired, I still do a lot of computer development.  Check out the Vintage BMW Motorcycle Owners (http://vintagebmw.org) website!

I think I must be stuck in a rut. It seems like all of my spare time is spent on two wheels. When I am not maintaining or riding my airhead and flying brick I can be found on what our members across the pond call a push bike (as opposed to a motor bike). I get in around 200 miles a week and last year (for the first time) I completed a Century ride (100 miles) for each month of the year.

Like many of the others, I also play music - sax & guitar, some harmonica, and am teaching myself to play the clarinet.   I also like to paint (acrylic & oil, but not that good at either) and write short stories.   I love camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, mtn biking, old electronics, new electronics, dogs,  target shooting/reloading, and tinkering on bikes.  I'm a jack-of-all-trades and master-of-none!  To generate cash, I am self employed consultant now (embedded systems design & software).

Oh, and I'm a Virgo with a bad moon rising, and married.

Sailing! Having no boat of my own I have to rely on good friends of which I have two who very obligingly put their time and boats at my disposal.

Spending time at our summer cottage situated near the beach in one of the most beautiful parts of Denmark.

greetings from a sunny, cloudless north with excellent driving conditions

"I'm just curious to know what the other hobbies or interests the good folks on this forum do when they aren't riding or wrenching on airheads."

Interesting thread.  I also ride and wrench on my old Triumph, my old Chevy Napco pickup, and my new (1989) CRX, though I don't enjoy wrenching on the latter.

I also make beer and wine when the other projects aren't as pressing, kayak on lakes or slow rivers, camp, run, lift weights, do my Tae kwon do forms, work in my woods thinning and limbing trees and making firewood, and sit around drinking beer and daydreaming.  And petting cats.  And I sometimes argue on the internet.

I'll see your bagpipes and raise you a pair of accordions.  Also have a keyboard, a bass, and a lot of audio recording and production gear. Always thought that nothing could motivate teenagers to flee the house like the click of accordion case latches opening-- but bagpipes might be an effective tool as well.

What a bunch of talented folks here!  I'm jealous.  ~sigh~

Although I like to fly our planes, avgas is pushing 5-6$ a gallon, and with trying to get a kid through college and next year he starts med school (and we're trying to do this without loans), that doesn't leave much disposable income, so the planes are mothballed until after he graduates.

I've have a big garden, we have enough bikes to keep  me wrenching for eternity, and I love to cook.  We have a small Rainier cherry orchard and I have been meaning to learn to make wine with the culls that are left after harvest.  Some day.......

You are right Dee!  There are a bunch of talented folks here.  Sounds like you've got enough to do too.  Rainier cherries?  Oh yummmy!   I love those!  Now I'm jealous.    ;)

I create fiberarts - in particular crochet and tunisian crochet, and I usually design my own stuff instead of following someone elses patterns.  I make beautiful things with wool and other yarns.  I love camping.  I like to hike or even just  walk around the neighborhood just to be outdoors.   I don't have a place for a garden right now, but growing my own fruit and vegies and flowers is something else I like to do.

Burt, Mrs. Phorqs just informed me that an accordian is merely a bagpipe with pleats!  We should get together and jam sometime.  Wonder how long it would take the High Sheriff of Wise County to throw us in the hoosegow for busking on the square in Decatur? [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Too bad I couldn't get any of the cherries that went to waste last summer.  Sweet cherry wine is the best I've ever made, though mine was from Royal Anns.

I'm jealous of you folks who are aviators - I had wanted to learn to fly, but something always seemed to come up.   I used to do quite a bit of rappeling and spelunking though not anymore.

Royal Anns and Rainiers are really very similar, I think.  I looked them up once.  I think they are both from the same trees brought in from Japan (?).    Both are really really good though.  And it's getting on to cherry time soon.............well, a few months.  I'd love to plant a few cherry trees.  Just have to watch out for the darn birds!!  I'd love to have a garden.

I like bagpipes!   8-)  But I really like the accordian if it's good Zydeco music being played!  Oh man!  That is such happy music!  Just gets my feet movin'.   ;D

Melena, for a really good time put on "Beausoille" on the vintage victrola while you whip up a batch of shrimp and grits.  I'm not sure which is better, but together it's heaven!  Oh yes, I like to eat in my spare time also.  And, when I'm not riding beemers, two of my favorite things are playing bagpipes and drinking scotch.  Unfortunately I've been told that most people would rather listen to me drink scotch!

And for all of you North Carolinians out there, my pipe band, the North Texas Caledonian Pipes & Drums, will be competing at the Loch Norman games near Charlotte next weekend.  I won't be with them this time, but give a listen if you go.  I think the draw is around 2pm on Saturday.

Funny thing is, we sell our cherries back to the Japanese!  I have heard that the good ones sell for about a $1 - $1.50 a piece!! in vending machines.  These are for the best of the best, just smaller than a golf ball and almost all red.

Our are jussstttt starting to bloom.  I love the trees, but they are maintenance intensive and the fruit damages easy.  If we get rain, we have to hire a helicopter to hover over the trees to dry the fruit, or the skin will burst and then....they're bird food.

And as far as the birds go, I have one of these:

I have a couple of collections of models I've kept over the years, BMW motorcycles and Porsches, which adorn a couple of book shelves in our study (and collect a LOT of dust).  I've also been into photography since I went back to get my degree in graphic design a few years ago, especially B&W prints.  It was pretty expensive to do even B&W photos, whether you developed your own or sent them off to be done, but I recently purchased a Nikon digital SLR camera, and now it's more or less "free" to do B&W or color, unless I choose to print out my photo on good photo paper.  (I bought a digital frame to display the pics I've taken that I like!)
I intend to try and get some good pics this summer while riding!     ;)

I need to do that to keep the birds and squirrels away from my hazelnut trees.  They pick the nuts off of the tree before they are ripe enough to fall!  It's not like there's a shortage of native hazelnuts around, but no, they have to eat mine too.

In my spare time?  What spare time?  :D  I'm a graphic designer by trade, and though my 8-5 job is Webmaster for a local non-profit, I still do some design work on the side.  I still love to draw (pen ink/charcoal) and paint (but I don't have the room for that at the moment). I love to write... even wrote a Sci-Fi novel in high school that promptly got rejected.  I've still got it and would love to get it published someday, after some extensive rework... maybe self-publish.

I played trumpet and french horn for many years, but haven't touched my trumpet in much too long. Started to teach myself electric bass but didn't have the time to pursue it.  I also drum and we'll probably purchase a small electronic set in the near future.

I'm a member of a local classic Mustang club and love wrenching on my 1965.  It was purchased new by my grandparents in 1964 and they gave it to me when I turned 16. I've kept it stock except for adding dual exhaust.  All original, never restored, though I did have it repainted the original color in 1992.  You can see photos of it here:

http://good-times.webshots.com/album/561362657rrdXff?vhost=good-times&action=refreshPhotos&albumID=561362657&security=rrdXff

But my biggest passion is cycling, both on the road and mountain biking.  Before Trish's father passed away, I was getting 100 miles per week on the road bike and 30 or so on the weekends on the mountain bike.  Not nearly as much now, but still my biggest passion.  I'm the local club's webmaster and graphic designer. I redesigned their website and keep it up to date.  http://www.sdmb.org

In what little spare time I have, I love to go four-wheeling / rock crawling.  I have a lifted, armored, and locked Xterra (which is also my daily driver).  I also play guitar, mostly in my church's praise band.  Until not too long ago, I was active in target shooting (handguns).  With the down economy and increased demands on employees, I have less spare time than ever before, so the target shooting has been on the back burner.

I bet with all the part time musicians here, we could have one hell of big band.

Great question.  Yesterday my daughter and I went down to the soccer fields and got my big (7') delta kite up to about 1000'.  Then we attached a little mylar box kite to the string and sent it climbing up to ride the wind with it's big brother.
My wife and I argued about how to reupholster the back porch stool, and somehow in the course of the argument, we managed to get it done.  It's how we do a lot of things.
Today I helped my wife dig cow manure and peat moss into her flower gardens.  I didn't argue with her; the gardens are her domain.  I'm just the hired help.
Then I rode my Peugeot bicycle out to Provin's MC shop where I picked up a new shift rubber for the LS.  Checked all the fluids.
Ate dinner.
Watched a movie.
Wrote this.
