Title: oil filter question/concern
Post by: mtpica on March 27, 2008, 02:50:04 AM
The bike is a stock 1982 R65.  We're doing the first oil change since purchasing it.

We removed a one piece oil filter with a black gasket/seal at each end.  The gasket/seal on the far end was significantly deformed and when we looked into the chamber that the filter inhabits we found a red O-ring at its far end around the pipe that the filter slides over.

I'm guessing the red O-ring shouldn't have been in there.  Is it possibly a left over part from a different style or older filter kit?

The replacement filter is a hinged two-piece unit with a black gasket/seal at each end.  I'm guessing it should be installed without the additional O-ring at the far end.  Am I correct?  Anything else we need to be aware of?

thanks!

Yes, you're correct in thinking the O ring is a remnant of a previous time/filter type. They sometimes forget to be removed, usually by owners who haven't seen them before and only have knowledge of the later filters and just ram the new filter home. Good thing you checked, I always cast a glance down there on bikes I haven't touched before.
The only other thing to check for is the metal shim at the lid end. Ensure it's installed and undamaged, and that you use a new O ring between it and the lid. No need for a gasket, probably better off without it.
