Post by: balibeemer on March 24, 2008, 07:13:55 AM
Does anyone know the Bosch, or Hella part number for the starter relay for a R 65 monoshock?. The BMW part no. is 61 36 1 389 105

Not offhand, but have you checked on ibmwr.org?  I seem to recall they have a list of common parts substitutes, and if there is a generic sub it will probably be in that list...

I didn't notice anything on the IBMWR website for this info, but snowbum's site has some useful info with a possible
cross reference, and an important note about increased current demand of the valeo starters:

Check it out:

Like everyone else, i don't know. But tell us what's up and maybe we can troublethoot from there, you might not need a new starter...

Here is IBMWR's list:

Unfortunately I did not find a sub for the starter relay listed, but if you need a solenoid...

I think that the starter relay for the '81 and later model year bikes might be quite specific to BMW motorcycles.

There is a diode in the starter relay to prevent the neutral light from coming on when the clutch lever is pulled in to shift the transmission.

If you remove the starter relay, you will see numbers like 88a, 87b next to the pins on the bottom, this is a SAE standard configuration for relays, if you can match an after market relay that has the same numbers at the pins and pin orientation, it may work, as long as you take the relay cover off and solder in a diode, a 1N4001 or similar diode will work if you need to get one.

IT WAS THE DIODE!. I got the relay apart and repaired it!

Less costly than replacing the entire relay.

I was wondering what the problem was with the relay.

This diode failure isn't too uncommon, but it is a bit difficult to troubleshoot, as the diode is located inside another component.

Glad to hear you got it repaired !
