Title: r65 and r65ls wheels
Post by: 79r65 on March 19, 2010, 07:58:17 PM
Question is, will r65ls wheels front and back fit on the r65?  Thanks. [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

I think that the answer is a "qualified" yes - meaning:

On the front:
The hub width of the LS wheels is not quite the same as the snowflake, so different spacers may be necessary on the axle between the fork stanchions from what, if any, the snowflake uses.   The rotor carrier depth (or height if you will) is different, so spacers may be needed to get the rotor and caliper alignment correct.   The LS has sealed front wheel bearings and I think that the snowflake's are not sealed.  I think that the axle diameter is the same (?).

On the rear, the LS wheel uses slightly larger "diameter" brake shoes than the snowflake.  I think that the other parts are compatible but you would need to get new rear shoes or have an even less effective rear brake than normal.

Thanks for the reply.  The snowflake is indeed non sealed bearings.  I think the rear is a larger hub diameter so will not fit the r65 (?).  Anyway, ebay has a posting for these ls wheels.

Those LS wheels sure would be a lot easier than the snowflakes to keep clean.

I wonder if you can get Lester mags to fit an R65?

Small point - the rear spindle for the LS is unique to that bike and differs markedly from the "standard" R65 rear wheel spindle fitted to these bikes post 9/80. I do however believe that the earlier type rear wheel spindle (i.e. pre 9/80) will fit the LS albeit about 10mm longer on the "hole" side.

Front spindle is the same for all.
