I saw one of the best ever motorcycle safety posters on a billboard in Switzerland a couple of years ago. It was in negative color, black/red, showing a bike coming head on at the camera,  leaning well over, rider knee on the road, obviously going really fast. The caption underneath read, in big letters (in French) "t'es sur?" which in English means: "you sure?". So it didn't mean go slow, it meant go fast if you want but make sure you know it's safe. It really stayed in mind.
The same road safety campaign had a poster reading in big letters: POLICE OFFICERS SLEEP TOO and in small letters below: but not all at the same time!

Good ad.  It should make everyone think.  Drivers need to be more alert to existence and presence of motorcycles.  But we also need to be alert to making ourselves more visible to drivers.

I hope you are not advocating that we all don yellow Bibs and dayglow Sam Brown's....

.....It is one of my pet hates.

If they are not looking then they will not see you.

Having said that, I did paint my bike Orange after being knocked off it.

Here is an analogy, it goes along these lines:

Guy pisses in the swimming pool

Pool has got piss in it!  yuk!

Close pool because its got piss in it.

You know, all pools have probably got piss in them?

All pools must be bad

Ban all pools

End of problem.

No!  Just get the guy to stop pissing in the pool!

This is how the socialist Nanny state works in the UK.

Anyone knocking a motorcyclist over should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Rant Over

By no means.  Actually, in my area, I find that wearing black leathers makes the drivers pay more attention to you than any other outfit.  (Yes, I have tried lighter color and more visible gear).  It seem that the drivers here associate riders dressed in black with being "Bad a$$" bikers, and they tend stay further away from you and not cut you off.

Our local Ural dealer sells ex-Soviet or ex-Polish military flat twins with sidecar fitted with a machine gun. He assures me that the gun is demilitarised but I"m sure it's a pretty good assurance of good behavour on the part of car drivers! (Actually these bikes are mostly used by WW2 re-enactors. A bit of field-grey and they look a little like a wartime BMW at about 1/10 the cost. Might cause trouble on the road as carrying even a replica gun openly in a public place is an offence in this country now.)
