During the 1980s some competitors in the French Paris-Dakar (trans-Sahara) rally rode BMWs with enormous desert fuel tanks. These came so low on the sides that it was almost impossible to get oil into the engine without lifting the tank.
So what did those clever French boys do? They drilled and tapped a hole in one rocker cover and there you are, an instant easy-access oil filler!
Info and attached photo from the French classic-bike magazine "La Vie de la Moto".

That's the method that BMW went with, on the oilhead bikes, only on the left valve cover .
To check the oil, there's a sight-glass on the left front of the engine, no more dipsticks .

Hey I did not know that. It just shows I've never been too close to an oilhead!
