Title: Foam
Post by: BooG on November 27, 2009, 03:39:40 AM
Have been putting in a new wire loom on my old Vespa and I have deceided to re-foam the seat. Does anyone know the best foam type to use? Just been researching but there are LOTS of foam types, and other than foaming at the mouth occasionally, I know nothing about foam.

In 2005 I bought some foam from Hi-Tech.  I can't find the receipt, so I can't say which densities I bought (2), but they obviously were not stiff enough.  http://www.seatfoam.com/text/products.htm  And the foam wasn't cheap.

I was very disappointed.  I had the foam installed by a auto/bike seat upholsterer ($60).  I continued to try different seat cushions (but never an Air Hawk), but I could never get past 45 min. comfort.  Well, 15 min. comfort and 30 min. of "pushing it".

Because I wanted to try something new, I bought a reproduction seat from S. Meyer (http://www.meyer-bikes.com/ersatz3.php?cat=32).  I haven't been so happy since the original seat was new!

I've had the seats redone on both R65's, and the oilhead, with an orthopedic gel pad .

It's about .75 inches (about 20mm) thick, that and a breathable covering, have transformed the seats form stock .

Don't get the thin gel pads, it's not worth the effort .
