Title: New '85 R65 Project Parts search
Post by: Sue_S on August 08, 2009, 11:10:05 AM
I just acquired a 1985 R65 that had an electrical fire with minimal damage.  It needs replacement parts and TLC.   Any suggestions on where to look for parts, (that may not be full retail)?
Thanks for your help

Hello, Sue, and welcome to the coolest R65 forum on the planet.
No brag, just fact.

I've used Ohio-based Re-Psycle http://re-psycle.com/ for a number of gently used R65 parts; seat locks, fuel caps, handlebar switch... they can help you with a simple 800 telephone call. Ask for Mark or Marco. Actually, they're both named Mark but they say it keeps from confusing customers. ;D

Chicago BMW http://chicagobmwmotorcycle.com/store/ offers new BMW parts at 20% off the website price. I like to call and confirm parts are in-stock. 800 number there, too.

Others will chime in soon. Post a photo of your hot bike when you get a chance.

Sue, pay very close attention to what Monte says.  He knows where all of the really cheep stuff is.  He can even show you how to score your daily breakfast without paying for it he's so cheep.  Oh yes, he generally knows what he's talking about too.

Welcome aboard!

D'oh... I just realized there's TWO Sue's on R65s! Canada and Carolina. Could we not refer to them as SueCanada and SueCarolina?

Love ya, Bengt.:D I'll mail you a donut plus pass your name on to my undertaker buddies.     Monte

I did a "where used" on the '85 R65 wiring harness (main) and found it also used in the R80 of the same vintage.  I would hazard a guess that one from an '87 or later R100 RS or RT might work as well but will have a couple of connectors that aren't used.  This should help broaden your parts source options.
